Myths and legends

According to myths and legends, the territory that we today call the Halkidiki peninsula, consisting of such parts as Kassandra, Sithonia and Athos, was inhabited by the titans. One day a battle ensued between them and the gods. In the old days, this land was called Flegra, which means "fiery place."

Legend has it that the titan Enkelad is buried alive under one of the rocks. Sometimes he wants to free himself, there is a terrible roar, the earth shakes under his powerful blows. And then what happens is modern man called an earthquake.

Locals claim that in ancient times the titans Athos and Siton quarreled over the beautiful mermaid Pallini. They angered Poseidon with this. He threw his trident, and a peninsula appeared with three "fingers" - peninsulas.

Many will be pleased with the resorts on the Halkidiki peninsula. Kassandra (you can see the photo in this article) offers interesting and informative excursions, a great vacation on the beach, original cuisine, luxurious nature, unique historical monuments, comfortable hotels.

Kassandra is the western "finger" of the Halkidiki peninsula, located just 60 kilometers from "Macedonia" - the international airport of Thessaloniki. At the same time, the location in the north of Greece and the small area of the peninsula - about 50 kilometers long and 15 kilometers wide at its widest point - did not prevent it from becoming one of the most beloved resort places both the Greeks themselves and foreign tourists.

The cities and towns of the Kassandra peninsula annually receive tens of thousands of vacationers, for whom all conditions are created for a comfortable stay - in addition to excellent beaches and the cleanest sea, the Greeks built here many first-class hotels, excellent restaurants and taverns, as well as a variety of entertainment venues.

The resorts of Kassandra are especially popular among young people - a vibrant nightlife attracts both avid party-goers and just lovers of walking and having fun during their holidays.

The beach season on the peninsula lasts from mid-May to mid-October

The history of the Kassandra peninsula in Halkidiki, like any other corner of Greece, is closely connected with myths: it was here that the Giants were born - the children of the sky god Uranus and the goddess of the earth Gaia.

Here, on Phlegre (as Cassandra was once called), the famous battle of the Giants with the gods of Olympus took place. One of the Giants was crushed by a rock thrown by the gods - they say that from time to time he tries to throw off a rock from himself and this causes earthquakes on Earth. The gods were able to defeat the Giants only with the help of Hercules, who managed to defeat the main one - Alkeon.

The peninsula was named after the eldest daughter of Alkeon - Pallini. For a long time it was called that, until King Cassander appeared here, who built the city of Cassandria, from where it comes modern name this "finger" of Halkidiki.

How to get to Kassandra

As we have already noted, the nearest international Airport is located 60 kilometers from Kassandra. Most cheap way to get from there to Kassandra - upon arrival, take the bus going to the KTEL Halkidikis bus station, where you can buy tickets to the place you need.

Buses to the Kassandra peninsula depart every 1.5-2 hours, a detailed schedule can be found on the official website of KTEL Halkidikis. Grekoblog wrote about this method in more detail in the article.

If you compete with public transport and you are reluctant to transfer, then it is quite possible to take a taxi. Despite the distance, this pleasure will be much cheaper than in others. European countries. If you are traveling to Kassandra with large luggage or children, then it is better to book a car in advance, for which you can use a specialized Internet service.

The peninsula is connected by regular bus service to Thessaloniki.

Its main feature is that the company is focused specifically on taxis from airports in Greece. The service independently monitors all flights and sends the car on time. Such an organization allows you to avoid expenses in case of a flight delay or cancellation - no money is taken for waiting for you at the terminal.

As a rule, the passenger and the driver meet at the exit from the baggage claim area and identify each other by the tablet with the name of the traveler, which is held by the taxi driver. Meeting details are sent to the tourist's email immediately after the order.

This method is also good because it completely excludes the possibility of any cheating and fraud, since the fare and approximate time on the way are known in advance: a detailed calculation is carried out at the stage of booking, even before paying for the trip. You don't have to pay anything "up top".

You can look at the service in more detail, calculate the price of the trip and order a car on this page.

The abundance of nightclubs and beach discos is a distinctive feature of Kassandra

Another way to get to the Kassandra Peninsula from Thessaloniki Airport is to rent a car. Moreover, it will be convenient to hand it over again at the airport upon departure. To book a car in Greece, even locals use the popular European online price comparison portal - Rentalcars.

Developed by the team behind Booking.com, Rentalcars works the same way – it unifies the available car rental options in a region, makes it easy to compare prices and conditions, and book instantly.

The only thing I want to add is that car rental is incredibly popular in Halkidiki during the season. Therefore, if you have found a car that you like, then it is better not to delay the booking. In July and August, the available assortment and prices change almost hourly.

Climate and weather

The climate of the Kassandra peninsula is typical of the Mediterranean - dry and warm, and sometimes even hot, summers and very warm and more humid winters. In the hottest months - July and August, there is practically no precipitation, and the air temperature reaches + 35C. The sea in Kassandra warms up in summer to + 24 + 26C. Winter weather is not very consistent with what we are used to - the thermometer rarely drops below + 8C.

The beach season in Halkidiki, due to the mild climate, lasts from mid-May to mid-October, but the largest number of tourists come to the peninsula in July-August.

Excursions

Almost every town and village on the Kassandra peninsula in Halkidiki has its own historical, archaeological or religious landmark, and often more than one.

In Afitos there are ancient quarries, an ethnographic museum and picturesque churches, in Sani there is a Byzantine fortress, in Nea Potidea there is a canal and the ruins of a fortress, in Nea Fokia there is a church, a chapel and a miraculous spring.

Each town and village has its own historical, archaeological or religious landmark.

A very interesting excursion from Kassandra to Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece, famous for its numerous museums, archaeological sites and vibrant nightlife.

No less exciting is the trip to the famous, which includes a visit to the Tembi gorge with its healing spring, and a tour of the monastery of St. Dionysius, and a check-in to one of the most beautiful villages Greece (which is officially recognized!). Trips to the cave of Alistrati and to the birthplace of Aristotle - Stagira are also popular.

But the main hit of excursions from the Kassandra peninsula is, of course, one of the main Orthodox shrines in Greece.

The beaches of Kassandra

The peninsula of Kassandra in Halkidiki is almost fifty kilometers of magnificent sandy beaches - perfectly clean, well-groomed, with excellent infrastructure.

All the main entertainment facilities of the peninsula are concentrated near the beaches - nightclubs, bars, discos. Along with large and crowded beaches, there are also small wild beaches in Halkidiki where you can relax and unwind from the hustle and bustle.

The beaches of Kassandra are ideal for families with children

Night life

With its bright and noisy nightlife, Kassandra resembles Ibiza - an abundance of nightclubs and beach discos allows vacationers to come off in full.

The main fun in the entertainment establishments of Kassandra begins after midnight and ends in the morning - the music subsides at 6-7 o'clock. The village of Kallithea is especially famous for its nightlife - it is here that the most popular clubs and discos are located, so for those who prefer a relaxing holiday, it is better to look for another place to stay.

Kassandra Peninsula: where to go on vacation?

Hello, friends! Today we will talk about the peninsula of Kassandra - the "Pearl" of Halkidiki. The peninsula is rich in natural scenery and clean beaches. Millions of people from every corner of our planet dream of being here to swim in the turquoise waters. Aegean Sea, see ancient sights and, of course, taste traditional Greek cuisine.

Where to rest on Kassandra? Which hotel or guest house to choose?

In the article, I made a selection of good offers, based on the reviews of tourists and the recommendations of "experienced" ones that I found on the forums. I tried to choose both budget and luxury options. Read mini reviews with prices, maybe these offers will interest you.

Halkidiki is the heart of international beach tourism. The blue of the Aegean Sea deservedly received the mark " blue flag”, which is assigned only to the cleanest beaches. Have you already imagined how beautiful it is here?

The peninsula of Kassandra is the "first finger" of Halkidiki. It is named after the strategist Alexander the Great. Previously, the peninsula had other names. But let's not go into history.

Unique monuments, clean sea, air filled with the aromas of forests and herbs, picturesque landscape, resorts with developed infrastructure and comfortable hotels on the coast - all this makes the Kassandra peninsula a paradise for young people and families with children.

The Mediterranean climate ensures hot summers. The tourist beach season in Kassandra begins in May (air - 24-25C, sea - about 20C) and ends in October (air - about 22C, sea - 20-22C). The hottest months are July and August.

Watch the video clip, which perfectly conveys the beauty of the peninsula.

Now let's talk about where it is better to relax on Kassandra. In my opinion, these options may interest you. I selected them based on a different budget, there are both expensive accommodation options and economy ones.

Resort Pefkohori

Pefkohori - perfect place to restore strength and health. This small village harmoniously combines mountain and sea air. Around pine forests, clean beaches and silence. A great option for a relaxing family holiday, right?

Adriana Studios

Among the good budget offers, Adriana Studios apartments can be distinguished. Not far from them is the sea. The beach is clean and fully equipped, relaxing here is a pleasure. Minus - in the peak season is crowded. Many more complain about unstable Fi-Wi and sometimes poor-quality room cleaning.

I would like to note: under the phrase “filled with vacationers”, you probably imagined the clogged city beaches of the Black Sea. But it's not. There is enough free space for unhindered movement.

The hotel itself is modern good numbers, you can choose a view of the sea or mountains. Relaxing in Adriana Studios will be convenient for everyone. But some attributes are high star hotels, it's not worth the wait. Suitable for a relaxing holiday with children. Price - from 36 euros per room per day. Many tourists note the convenient location of the hotel and the optimal price / quality ratio.

Hotel Aeollos

Among more expensive options the Hotel Aeollos can be noted. It is located next to the beaches of Xenia and Chaniotis. The only drawback is a large number of people during the season. As was the case with the previous hotel.

Hotel Aeollos offers its guests worthy conditions for recreation: modern rooms, SPA, restaurants, dry cleaning, laundry, free parking, animation program. The hotel is suitable for a relaxing pastime with the whole family. The price per room per night is approximately 108 euros.

Art Boutique

If it is possible to relax on Kassandra expensively and luxuriously, then I advise you to book a room at the Art Boutique hotel. The studios and apartments feature original décor. There is a kitchenette and other amenities for demanding guests. The beach is clean and right in front of the hotel. A great option for a family. Are there any downsides? I did not encounter negative reviews about Art Boutique. The cost of the room is high - 158 euros per day.

Kallithea resort

If you are going to rest on Kassandra, pay attention to the resort of Kallithea. Here you will especially like active tourists. Bars, clubs, restaurants, work for guests around the clock. This is a place for young people. And for those who get tired of nightlife you can go sightseeing. From anywhere in this resort, a beautiful landscape opens up, which also has a positive effect on the emotional state.

Maria

From budget options I liked hotel Maria. Kallithea beach is 200 meters away. If you wish, you can relax by the pool. Tourists note the cleanliness of the rooms and the responsiveness of the staff. Who, by the way, is Russian-speaking here. Of the minuses, the lack of parking on site.

Such accommodation on Kassandra is suitable for budget travelers. Despite enough low price conditions are decent. The cost of a room per day is only 30 euros.

Pallini Beach Hotel

In the middle category, I liked Pallini Beach. The hotel is located on the seafront. Beautiful green area, several pools. A great option for both young people and families with older children. There is a volleyball court, a bar, entertainment events are held regularly. In general, you can relax here with dignity, a good option for living on Kassandra.

Night clubs are located near the hotel. This makes it noisy in the evenings. The cost of a room per night is from 68 euros.

Villa Christie

Do you want a luxurious holiday? Rent a villa in Kassandra. For example, at your service is a guest house - Villa Kristy. Located 150 meters from the chic beach (marked with the Blue Flag).

The villa provides everything for quality rest of guests. The staff is always polite. Tourists leave only positive reviews about Villa Kristy. Price per villa per day - from 230 euros.

Chanioti Resort

Where else can you relax on Kassandra? Pay attention to the resort of Chanioti. Tourists speak well of this place of the peninsula.
Lively resort town. Local taverns will delight you with a variety of Greek dishes. Lots of shops, but no branded ones. Very beautiful promenade, nice to walk along the sea in the evening.

Bella Greece

Among the inexpensive hotels on the Kassandra peninsula in the village of Chanioti, I was attracted by the Bella Grecia guest house. It is located about 150 meters from the sea. The beach is clean. In the territory guest house there is a snack bar and a children's pool. Barbecues are often organized. The rooms are modern and fully equipped for a comfortable stay.

After reading the reviews, I learned that many consider the main disadvantages of the hotel to be its adjoining the road and the poorly lit route to the store. But the cost of the room will please you, per day - from 20 euros. Agree, a very good price. Therefore, such shortcomings can be closed eyes. As you can see, you can relax on Kassandra on a budget. Do you think so too?

Ostria Seaside 4*

A more expensive option is the Ostria Sea Side Hotel. It offers a Greek restaurant, an outdoor pool and modern rooms with views of the Aegean Sea. The beach is very clean.

This is a good place to stay with small children. Of the minuses - not too active entertainment. But not everyone needs it. Sometimes tourists complain that the room is poorly cleaned. But mostly the reviews are positive. The price of a room on knocks is from 120 euros.

Villa Aelia

A luxurious option for staying at the resort will be the Aelia Beach Villa. It is located right on the beach, with French windows offering stunning views of the sea. The beach is clean and empty. Guests can rent a car or a yacht. Ideal for privacy. Suitable for everyone who is willing to pay about 350 euros per day. It is a pity that not everyone has the opportunity to relax so chic.

Resort Afytos

Afytos is the revived history of ancient Greece. One of the most tranquil resorts on Cassandra. Cozy streets, picturesque houses immersed in greenery, gorgeous beaches and clear sea. It is comfortable for everyone to relax here.

Palatino Apartments

For budget holiday fit in Afitos Apartment Palatino. Located on a hill, 15 minutes walk to the beach. For guests, there is a tennis court, basketball and mini-football courts, self-catering apartments, a children's playground with slides and other amenities.

There are practically no young people. Tourists in the reviews note "tired" furniture. From the pros, responsive hosts and beautiful view on the sea. The cost of a room per day is from 40 euros. A little expensive, of course, given the distance from the beach, but the stunning sea view justifies the inflated price.

Apartments Boutique Niovi

The Niovi Boutique apartments can be called an average vacation option. The main disadvantage is that it is about 7 km to the beach. This is a great option for family accommodation with a car, it will be difficult to relax without a car.

The apartments are new, with high quality finishes and stylish design. Comfortable pool area. Even despite such remoteness, the hotel deserves your attention. Couldn't resist telling you about it!
The price of a room per day is from 90 euros. An ideal option for the conditions that the hotel offers.

Afitis Boutique Hotel

For those tourists who want to relax in luxury, I found the Afitis Boutique Hotel in Kassandra. It seems to me that every traveler will feel here as if in a dream. It is located in a picturesque garden. Well suited for "passive" tourists, for whom comfort is important.

The hotel has its own beach, 2 outdoor pools, massage room, hot tub, 2 restaurants and sea view rooms. I don't think it's worth mentioning how top-notch everything here is.

The downsides are minor: tourists complain that you can't store your food in the minibar, and that it's too quiet here. Apparently, active tourists should not go here. The price of the room is high - from 440 euros.

Prices in all resorts of Kassandra are approximately the same - 40, 100, 200 euros for economy, standard, luxury, respectively. One thing can be said about the beaches - they are all clean and beautiful here. No wonder they got the Blue Flag.

The beautiful relief of the Greek peninsula of Halkidiki, which includes mountains, dense pine forests, wide winding sandy beaches, beautiful plains, has long been a favorite vacation spot for many tourists, including Russian ones.

Vacationers in Halkidiki are well acquainted with each "finger" of the peninsula - Athos, Kassandra, Sithonia (the peninsula branches into 3 separate parts). By the way, the Greeks, unlike us, call these branches of the island “legs”.

Let's talk about Cassandra today - popular resort peninsula of Halkidiki.

In ancient times, Kassandra had another name - Phlegra (Φλέγρα), which meant a place of fire. According to mythology, this territory belonged to the Giants, in the era of gigantomachy it was a battlefield when the giants tried to expel the Gods from Olympus.

Kassandra (Κασσάνδρα) is the westernmost "finger" of the Chalkidiki peninsula, it is closer to the city of Thessaloniki.

Like a ship at anchor, the Kassandra peninsula is waiting for its vacationers to set off on a summer journey along beautiful beaches with crystal clear sea water.

Kassandra is the most densely populated of the three peninsulas of Halkidiki with a well-developed infrastructure. Kassandra offers an active nightlife with dozens of bars along the coast and in the villages, large hotel complexes, small family hotels, various festivals in the Sani hotel complex, unique archaeological sites, thermal springs and gastronomic pleasures.

Impressive is the entrance to Kassandra - the canal that connects Halkidiki with the Nea Potideas (Ποτίδαιας) bridge - this is the first village that the visitor encounters.

In essence, the Kassandra peninsula can be called an island, separated from the coast by the Potideas canal, from the height of which a stunning panoramic view especially at sunset.

Nea Potidea in ancient times it was called "The Doors of Kassandra", because of its advantageous geographical and strategic position (the narrowest point), from here they controlled 2 bays, and the surviving fragments of the fortress wall speak of a great past. Since ancient times, Nea Potidea has been in the thick of historical events - it was part of the Athenian maritime union, it was destroyed by Philip of Macedon and restored by Cassander.

Nea Potidea presents a different picture today - these are hiking trails suitable for cycling, green gazebos, beaches with a warm and clear sea. On the west side, a small marina with professional and amateur boats. Here you can buy fresh fish or order it for lunch in one of the many local taverns with a magnificent view of the canal. Romantics can enjoy the sunset near the lighthouse of Nea Potideas, which is located on the edge of the beach, and after that, enjoy chilled drinks in one of the bars, accompanied by Greek music.

Nea Potideas is located 56 km from Thessaloniki Airport.

The capital of Kassandra is the city Polygyros(Πολύγυρος), located more than 500 m above sea level.

To the north of Polygyros stretch the slopes overgrown with oaks, which make up a beautiful forest, the city is famous for its healthy climate.

Polygyros has Archaeological Museum, many parks and picturesque squares, in the old part of the city, buildings from the time of Turkish rule have been preserved. Every year there are events such as: celebrations in honor of the revolution in Halkidiki, which have established themselves as a local national holiday and the famous Polygirou carnival, this is the history of many decades, which is one of the most important traditions of this place.

At your service a variety of shops, cafes, bars, taverns, the menu of which necessarily includes freshly caught fish and seafood.

From Polygyros to Thessaloniki about 70 km

Nea Moudania, the second largest settlement, after Polygyros. There are many shops, banks, restaurants, cafes. in the theater under open sky there are concerts and performances. Sand beach includes everything you need - locker rooms, sun loungers, toilets, there is a large playground.

Nea Moudania is located 50 km from Thessaloniki Airport.

Agia Paraskevi - small village(from Thessaloniki 125 km), which is famous for its spa, built on thermal springs surrounded by pine forests. Many choose Ag.
