What to see on the southwest coast of Thailand - the sights of Krabi. What to see in Krabi and Ao Nang - a list of attractions The most beautiful places in Krabi

Article text updated: 02/09/2019

Krabi Province is located in the southern part of Thailand, almost a thousand kilometers from Bangkok. The nature here is very different from the landscape that you can see while relaxing in Pattaya. I wanted to get to Krabi to see the beautiful limestone rocks sticking out of the water. Although, as it turned out, the region has a huge number of attractions that can be seen on the ground.

  1. Photo report about the rest in Krabi in 2010.
  2. Brief overview of the province. Clarification of geography (map of the location of Krabi city, resort and airport; map of beaches).
  3. How to get from Phuket, Koh Samui and other parts of Thailand.
  4. What time of year is the high season.
  5. What sights can be seen in the province (map of the location of reserves).

Note from 09.02.2019

The report you are reading now is based on the results of the first trip to Thailand in 2010. Then we visited, basically, only very tourist places provinces. In the years that have passed since the first trip, my wife and I visited this country three times.

Including, in 2015, we rented a car at Bangkok airport and drove 2500 km to the south and back. I advise you to read a series of reviews about that trip in the “Independent Travel” section - a lot of useful information both on relaxing in Krabi and on organizing a trip to Thailand.

Another chapter contains a lot of useful information for tourists traveling wild: how to buy cheap air tickets, why you should not book hotels in advance, the climate throughout the year in different regions of the country. You can also download a detailed guide to all the reserves in Thailand.

1. Photo report about the rest in Krabi (Krabi)

It is said that the director of the film "Avatar" was inspired by the views of the mountains in Chinese province Zhangjiajie National Park. But this is pure marketing and the struggle for the tourist flow. I haven't been to Zhangjiajie yet. But I think that the mountains on Krabi or on the Philippine island of Palawan (Palawan) became the prototype of Pandora. Another contender for a muse for James Cameron is the Vietnamese Ha Long Bay. And yet, the mountains in also could well be the cause of inspiration for the American.

From Pattaya (Phattaya) to Bangkok (Bangkok) ordered a taxi at 5 am. Toyota Corolla - 800 baht, Camry - 1200 baht. We ordered a Corolla, but Camry arrived;)) for 800 baht + 60 baht toll highway.

The flight duration from Bangkok to Krabi Airport is one hour. On the first floor at the ticket office, there is an announcement in large letters “The bus to Ao Nang is leaving right now!”. The ticket price is 300 baht per person. It takes about 50 minutes to drive from the airport to the village. Dropped off in front of our hotel Aonang Paradise Resort & LongStay Krabi.

From the hotel I was shocked several times. The first time at the reception, the girl fell on her knees in front of us and did not want to get up in any way. She explained the rules of staying in a hotel on her knees.

Secondly, the room cost 2800 baht per day. In the photo there was a room in a wooden interior, but they did a renovation and our room was in modern style: the bed, shelves and walls are made of concrete, sanded and varnished. At first it seemed depressing to me, but my wife was delighted! Bungalows stand at the foot of a cliff in the middle of the jungle.

In general, food, staff, rooms - super! I would like to go back there again.

Photo 7. On the top of the mountain of the Tiger Temple (Tiger Cave Temple or Wat Tham Sua). From our group, no one else wanted to climb, so the guide allocated only 1 hour for ascent and descent. It is very small and very difficult. In 2015, we climbed here again, but on our own and were in no hurry. Reviews about the rest in Thailand.

11. One of the excursions on the peninsula includes: swimming in the Emerald Pool, climbing the mountain of the Tiger Cave Temple and riding elephants through the jungle. On the first trip to Thailand, the experience was unsuccessful: one of the elephants went berserk, and ours slipped and fell while descending into the river ... This is how our faces looked five minutes after this unpleasant and terrible event. Reviews of tourists about independent rest in Thailand.

Photo 12. Beach on the island of Poda (Koh Poda) in Krabi. Tourists are brought here on excursions from both the Krabi Peninsula and Phuket. In November 2010, we bought an excursion to 4 islands, in 2015 we swam to Podu for 200 baht on our own.

Photo 12 Rest here is like in Paradise. The main thing is to use sunscreen. In February 2015 we spent the whole day at Koh Poda. It's good that I swam in a shirt and a bandana. Otherwise it would burn out.

Attention! In the report you see 2 photos where we feed the fish in the sea. As of autumn 2017, this is strictly prohibited: feeding marine life is punishable by a fine of 3,000 US dollars (180 thousand rubles) or imprisonment for 1 year.

The same punishment comes into force for smoking on the beaches of Thailand: 3000 USD or 1 year in prison. Be careful!

We went on 3 excursions. The first time we bought tickets on the street. But then the girls from the reception told us at the hotel: “What are you, like dodiki? We will sell you tickets at a discount! And two more excursions were already taken at the hotel.

The first excursion is to 4 islands: Chicken Island (Chicken Island), Poda (Poda), Tab Island (Tub Island) and Koh Dam Kwan. I liked it very much. Especially Poda (Koh Poda)!!! Here is Heaven on Earth! And it was possible not to go to other places, but simply take a boat directly to this island.

The second excursion is to the tiger temple and an elephant ride. Loved it too! Only almost died: climbing 1240 steps up the mountain is incredibly difficult. Yes, and the elephant, along with us on his back, fell into the river, because. it rained at night, the shore became slippery. The animal slipped and fell sideways.

The third excursion is to 5 islands. Compared to a trip to the four islands - a complete disappointment. Everywhere is a crowd of people. They drive to the island: “Take pictures for 5 minutes and go further!”. Stopped for lunch, I think Phi Phi Don. I didn’t like it there either - a lot of people !!! Sorry for the wasted time.

In fact, this trip was the first experience of a savage going on vacation to a distant country. We saw little. We went to Thailand for the second time (to Pattaya, as a continuation of our trip to China) in March 2014 and again we were delighted with the country. I am sure that we will also visit Krabi, however, this time, most likely, we will rent a car and drive around Thailand. Below is the information that I am slowly collecting for my future trip. Maybe you will need it too.

Scheme of the location of attractions on the map of the province of Krabi, which you can see on your own. You can see that Koh Phuket and the Krabi peninsula are next to each other. Please note: the observation deck on the Tab Kak Hang Nak Hill Nature Trail is marked in blue, which offers the same amazing views as from Wat Tam Suea (Tiger Temple), but they are “not hackneyed”. Description and coordinates are given in the comments to the 10th chapter of the Thailand driving report in 2015 (link at the end of the article).

2. Overview of Krabi Province

The most beautiful region in the south of Thailand is the province of Krabi, located 814 kilometers from the capital of the country. The region covers an area of 4,708 square kilometers. From the West, it is washed by the Adaman Sea, in the North it borders on the provinces of Surat Thani and Phang-nga, in the South - on the Trang region, in the East - on the provinces of Nakhon Si Thammarat and Trang. Trip to Krabi perfect place for a vacation if you want to sunbathe on the white sands, go diving or snorkeling, explore the underwater life of coral reefs, visit the many large and small islands, walk through virgin evergreen forests, climb caves and swim in waterfalls.

Basically, the landscape of the province of Krabi is mountains and hills, separated in places by beautiful plains. The Maenam Krabi River, which flows through the capital of the region and flows into the Adaman Sea in the Pak Nam region, is 5 kilometers long. There are also several canals (Khlong Pakasai, Khlong Krabi Yai and Khlong Krabi Noi) supplying water from the region's highest ridge, Khao Phanom Bencha. In the delta of the Maenam Krabi River itself and along the banks of the channels, you will see luxurious mangrove forests. The sandy soils in Krabi Province are suitable for growing a variety of plants such as rubber trees, palms, coconuts, cashew nuts and coffee.

Due to the influence of tropical monsoons, Krabi has only two seasons: hot from January to April and rainy from May to December. The air temperature varies from 17 to 37 C.

The province of Krabi is divided into 8 amphe (as districts are called in Thailand): Mueang, Khao Phanom, Khlong Thom, Plai Phraya, Ko Lanta, Ao Luek, Lam Thap and Nuea Khlong. The regional government is responsible not only for the state of affairs on the mainland, but also for more than 130 large and small islands, including the famous Phi Phi islands among our tourists.

The beaches of Ao Nang and Hat Rai Le are world famous, where you can book numerous tours for diving, have a delicious meal in restaurants, buy souvenirs, and so on. Unforgettable impression leave behind limestone cliffs and rock formations that make Krabi a rock climbing paradise. 40 kilometers from the city there is a national park where you can see beautiful lakes, caves and magnificent landscapes.

Update as of February 9, 2019

2.1. A little explanation for tourists on the geography of Krabi

Discussing with blog readers, with acquaintances who were going to relax in Thailand, I realized that there is some confusion in the perception of what Krabi is.

So, Krabi (Krabi) is a province, most of which is located on the mainland. It also includes a large number of large and small islands. The most famous Russian tourist of these - Koh Lanta (Koh Lanta) and Phi Phi (Ko Phi Phi).

To make it easier to understand, I propose to distinguish four concepts:

  1. Krabi Town is a city, the capital of a province. Here are located government authorities, bus station and port, hospitals, markets, shopping centers. In the distance is Krabi Airport (KBV).
  2. Krabi Resort- these are about 16 beaches stretching for a distance of 20 km from the coast opposite the island of Koh Lanta in the south to Thap Kaek in the North. In the past, there were fishermen's villages here, now they are fashionable and not very places for tourists to relax.
  3. Krabi Islands- there are a huge number of them. You can get here by buying an excursion at a travel agency on the shore. During the first trip in 2010, we took 2 tours: to 4 islands near Ao Nang beach (Chicken Island, Poda, Tub Island and Koh Dam Kwan) and to 5 islands (Phi Phi). In 2015, we arrived in the province in a rented car, on the way we bought plenty of other places, so we sailed to Krabi only on the island of Poda on our own on a shuttle boat (see report No. 11 for 2015).
  4. The rest of the province of Krabi mountains, plains, fields, waterfalls, villages and towns.

3. History of Krabi

Some archaeological finds allow us to consider the city of Krabi the oldest settlement in Thailand. People settled in these places as early as 25’000 – 35’000 BC. The evidence is found among the rocks and in caves stone tools, rock paintings, beads, ceramic fragments and bones of people.

In 1200 AD, Krabi was called Ban Thai Samo, it was one of the 12 royal cities whose symbol was a monkey. At that time, Krabi was part of the kingdom of Ligor (Ligor) with its capital in the city, which is now called Nakhon Si Thammarat.

During the reign of King Rama 5th (1868-1910), the region was renamed Pakasai and left under the control of the provincial capital, the city of Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Around 1872, Rama V decided to raise the status of Pakasai and appointed Krabi as the capital of the region, and settled the regional administration in Krabi-yai (now it is located near the estuary of the Pak Nam microdistrict). In 1875, an official decree was issued on the separation of Krabi from the province of Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Grateful residents in the person of civil servants, merchants and commoners donated money and built a royal residence on the cape Laem Hang Nak Cape, which is 30 kilometers west of the city of Krabi, on the shores of the Adaman Sea, to thank His Majesty.

4. Origin of the name Krabi (Krabi)

There are 2 legends that tell about the appearance of the name "Krabi". The first tells that the villagers accidentally found a huge ancient sword (called krabi in the local dialect) and handed it over to the governor. Later, another, already a small sword was found, and it was also presented to the leadership of the regional committee. The governor decided that these were things in the city economy that were necessary, sacred and promising good luck, and therefore swords should be left in the provinces. At that time, the formation of the region as an independent region was still going on, so the swords were set crosswise in the Khao Khanap Nam cave. Since then, crossed swords have been depicted on regional seals.

The second story says that the word "Krabi" comes from the name of a local tree known as "Lumphi". But merchants from Malaysia and China mangled the pronunciation and said "Ka-lu-bi" or "Kho-lo-bi", which as a result turned into "Krabi" (Thai means "sword").

5. How to get to Krabi from Bangkok

To get to Krabi by car, you need to leave the capital along Highway 4, pass the provinces of Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Ranong and Phang-nga. The distance between Bangkok and Krabi is 946 kilometers.

Another option to get from Bangkok to Krabi is to also take Highway 4, drive to Chumphon Province, turn onto Highway 41, cross Amphoe Lang Suan District (amphe) in Surat Thani Province, Amphoe Wiang Sa and then take Highway No. 4035 towards Amphoe Ao Luek area, and then - again along Highway No. 4. Such a trip by car will be 814 kilometers long.

If the option of renting a car in Thailand does not suit you, go to Krabi by bus. Comfortable air-conditioned buses depart daily from 6:30 am to 8:00 pm from the Southern Bus Terminal on Borommaratcha Chonnani Road. You can choose a regular seat, 2nd class with air-conditioned seat, 1st class and VIP class. The trip from Bangkok to Krabi by bus takes about 12 hours. Details can be found at: www.transport.co.th.

But you can get to Trang or Nakhon Si Thammarat (the train leaves from Hua Lamphong Station in Bangkok). Train timetables can be viewed at: www.railway.co.th. From these cities, you can already take a bus or take a taxi to Krabi itself.

For example, in the direction of Trang station, the express train leaves Bangkok every morning at 5:05 and arrives at the final stop at 21:40. A regular train leaves the capital at 6:20 and arrives in Trang at 00:20 at night.

To go to some place in the city or in the suburbs, it is tedious to go to the Krabi Bus Terminal, located in Talat Kao. There are local red buses and city routes operating from 6 am to 5 pm. On public transport you can drive to the main tourist attractions. The price of a trip around the city is 10 baht. To go further, for example, to Ao Nang or Noppharat Thara, you need to catch a white bus on Maharat Road for 20 baht.

6. When is the best solo travel season in Krabi

The province of Krabi is located in the tropical zone, which means that it is warm here all year round. On the other hand, the weather in Krabi is influenced by tropical monsoons, bringing with them the change of seasons.

There are two very hot seasons in this part of Thailand. The first, with an air temperature of 27 to 36 degrees Celsius, lasts from April to May. Only occasional tropical thunderstorms provide some relief from the heat.

Also, it is very hot between September and October, but frequent tropical showers give a pleasant coolness.

If you travel in May, get ready to get wet, as at this time, at the peak of the southwest monsoons, there are up to 25 rainy days per month, making it the wettest period of the year. Rainy days alternate with sunny ones, and the rain usually falls like a real tropical downpour: powerful, but not more than an hour. And during the day the weather can change several times: rain and sun.

The most popular time to visit Krabi is from November to March. The skies are blue, most of the time it is sunny with temperatures ranging from 24 to 32 degrees. If you want to go to Krabi on your own at this time, it is recommended to book a hotel in advance, as travelers from all over the Earth will come here.

7. Festivals

Perhaps you will get to Krabi Boek Fa Andaman Festival, which
held annually to celebrate the opening of the tourist season in the province. Locals organize parades, an exhibition of local products, kayak competitions in the sea and boat races.

The Loi Ruea Chao Le Festival is special. It is arranged on the island of Ko Lanta by sea gypsies. The festival is held on the full moon in the sixth and eighth months of the lunar calendar. Sea gypsies from Ko Lanta and nearby areas gather on the beach near Ban Sala Dan and take boats out to sea to return with good fortune. The traditional southern dance The Rong Ngeng is danced around the boats and local music is played.

8. Local products

Hoi Chak Teen (gastropods)

Hoi chak clams or winged shells belong to the Strombus Canxarium family. Outwardly, they are similar to strombids, but smaller and colored brown. A distinctive feature is a dark brown leg, which is called "teen" in Thai slang. Hoi Chak Teen is found in the Adaman Sea off the coast of Krabi and neighboring provinces.

To prepare yummy, winged shells are soaked for half an hour in salt water. To add spice, add a little ground chili pepper. Then the poor shells begin to move, stick their legs out and try to get rid of the dirt inside their house. They are washed several times and finally dipped in a pot of cold water. Then they put the vessel in the oven and heat it up, the shell releases its leg. Delicious meat is ready to eat immediately after cooking.

To eat a winged shell, you need to stretch the clam by the leg. It tastes better if you dip it in a sauce of garlic, chili, sugar and lemon juice.

Hoi chak teen is a popular snack in Krabi. And the shells themselves are used to make souvenirs and home decorations.

Som Shogun (Shogun oranges)

Oranges are famous for their sweet taste. They have a thin skin and some pulp, and are best eaten fresh.

Orange trees bloom from March to June (the period depends on the climate in a particular region), and the ovary appears in a month. The crop is harvested after 8-9 months.

The most common breeding method is cuttings. Fruits begin to be harvested no earlier than the tree reaches the age of three.

Koh Lanta Yai is the birthplace of "Chao Le" or sea gypsies, who continue to live, as they did many centuries ago, on drifting boats and believe that during the full moon in June and November, everything that floats away is carried away by the devil, and everything brought by the sea is a gift from God. There are hotels for tourists on this island. But on Ko Lanta Noi there is a building of regional authorities.

Most of the beaches on Ko Lanta Yai are located in the western part of the island: Kho Kwang, Khlong Dao, Phra Ae, Khlong Khong, Khlong Nin and Ba Kan Tiang. They can be reached by road. The choice of tourists - a huge number of accommodation options.

Ko Rok Islands

This attraction also includes two islands: Ko Rok Nai and Ko Rok Nok. On the first one, Ko Rok Nai, you will find many sheer cliffs with excellent beaches below them and undisturbed coral reefs between the cliffs. But the island of Ko Rok Nok (Koh Rok Nok) boasts fine white sand and shallow corals on the beaches of Hat Thalu and Ao Man Sai opposite the southeast and south of the island.

Travelers can contact travel agencies or ask at a hotel in Koh Lanta to book a speedboat to Ko Rok. It is not advised to take a longtail to swim to the island of Koh Rok.

Ko Talabeng Island

Talabeng is a limestone island, similar to the famous Ko Phi Phi Le, with numerous small beaches and caves, clearly visible at low tide. Well, there are a lot of corals here.

Mu Ko Lanta National Park

Mu Koh Lanta Natural Park covers an area of 152 square kilometers. It includes a large number of islands of various sizes, some of which are surrounded by beautiful coral reefs, such as Ko Ha, Ko Rok and Ko Hai. The main island of the reserve is Ko Lanta Yai, mentioned above, on which the headquarters and management of the park are located. The best time to visit Mu Koh Lanta National Park is from November to April.

How to get to the islands of Ko Lanta (Ko Lanta)

Boats depart from Krabi town to Ko Lanta Yai every day. The journey lasts 2.5 hours.

Ao Nang Bay

Ao Nang is located about 6 kilometers from the Nat Noppharat Thara National Park and 20 kilometers from the city of Krabi. Large bay with great beaches and 83 islets. There are several in A o Nang famous beaches: East Rai Le (East Railay), West Rai Le (Western Railay) and Tham Phra Nang (cave), located at the foot of limestone cliffs. Boats can be rented for tours around Ao Nang, Hat Tham Phra Nang (Hat Tham Phra Nang) and Hat Nam Mao (Hat Nam Nao).

Also from Ao Nang beach you can take a boat to other popular islands: Ko Poda, Ko Kai, Ko Mo and Ko Thap. The presence of a large number of colored coral reefs and cartoonish colorful fish makes these islands ideal for diving and snorkeling.

Today, Ao Nang has become a 5-star tourist attraction with a large number of high-end hotels and boutiques, diving schools and boat rentals. Popular excursions are canoeing and kayaking along the coast, exploring mangrove forests, visiting islands and semi-submerged caves.

Hat Noppharat Thara Beach (Noppharat Thara Beach)

Hat Noppharat Thara is located 6 kilometers from Ao Nang. This is a three-kilometer beach with white sand, casuarina and thickets of coconuts. The shore is strewn with tiny shells and used to be called "Hat Khlong Haeng", which means "dry channel", as the area turns into a long beach at low tide.

Located 18 kilometers northwest of Krabi Town, Hat Noppharat Thara Beach is actually part of the Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park and the Park Authority is located here. Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi Nature Reserve covers a huge area on land and at sea.

Boats to Ko Phi Phi can be taken from this beach all year round. You can get to the beach by songthaew from Krabi for 20 baht and go further to Ao Nang (fare 10 baht).

Hat Rai Le (Rai Le Beach)

Hat Rei Le beach is divided into two zones: east and west. West Rai Le is famous for its peace and quiet, as there are far fewer hotels on its wide sandy beach than on Ao Nang.

East Rai Le is located across the peninsula and, unlike West Rai Le, is unlike most beaches in the region. It can be considered a "tidal strip", especially at low tide. In addition to amazing views and mangrove forests in the north of the beach, rock climbing is the main activity on the beach.

The limestone cliffs on the large headland between Hat Rai La East and Tham Phra Nang, as well as other neighboring islets, provide world-class rock climbing as well as stunning sea views. In total, there are approximately 700 sports tracks here: from average to higher levels difficulties.

Photo 16. People go to the Krabi peninsula not only to relax on the sea, but also for other entertainment. Here, for example, is a Mecca for climbers. Railay Beach.

Hat Tham Phra Nang beach

Hat Tham Phra Nang can only be reached by sea. Here is a fabulous, flour-thin, white sand and glass-clear water, delightful karst hills. Tourists from all over the world flock here to find solitude and relaxation.

The only building on the beach is the 5-star Rayavadee Hotel (located next to Phra Nang Beach), which owns 10 hectares of beach.

Outside and inside the Phra Nang Caves, the Phra Nang Lagoon offers an unforgettable view of the rocks and the sea. Here you can find hotels for every budget. Also, this place can only be reached by boat, and the main activities are snorkeling, diving and rock climbing.

Mountain Khao Khanap Nam

Two mountains at the entrance, about 100 meters high, separated by the Maenam Krabi River, are considered symbols of the city of Krabi. Here, too, there are beautiful caves with stalactites and stalagmites that deserve a separate study. A large number of human skulls were found in the caverns. There is an assumption that people took refuge in the cave, but died instantly during the flood. You can get to the mountains of Khao Khanap Nam by longtail in 15 minutes if you rent a boat at Chao Fa Pier. Maybe someone will be interested in taking a tour for 300 baht, including a visit to the cave, mangrove forest and the fishing village of Ko Klang.

- these are the most important and beautiful places created by both nature and man, such as large waterfalls, emerald lakes, high limestone cliffs and popular islands in nature reserves, as well as ancient Buddhist temples and monasteries that are located in the province of Krabi (Thailand ) and annually attract the attention of millions of people from all over the world. Judging by the reviews of tourists, there are quite a lot of interesting sights in Krabi, and for every taste. Therefore, if you are going to go to the sea in Thailand, for example, to the island of Phuket, then be sure to keep in mind that during your vacation you should definitely go on an excursion to Krabi for one or more days. And it is better to do it yourself, because in Krabi there is undoubtedly something to see and what to visit, what to do, where to go, where to swim.

Attractions Krabi - my top 5

Things to do in Krabi, as I said, a lot. Therefore, I decided to highlight five of the best attractions in the province of Krabi, which are definitely worth a visit to tourists who come to Thailand. After all, if you leave Krabi without seeing them, then you will probably regret it. But it doesn’t matter, because on the other hand you will have one more reason to return to rest in Krabi (read about the weather for months and seasons in the article -) or make a trip around Thailand independent travel.

Here are the top 5 attractions in Krabi:

Next, I will talk about each of the attractions of Krabi that are included in my top 5, and explain how to get there, how much money and time you need to spend on viewing. I will proceed from the fact that it will be necessary to depart from where most of the tourists vacationing in Krabi live. If you live on any other beaches, for example, on Railay or even on my favorite Phi Phi islands, then you first need to choose on your own and then go on excursions to the sights from there.

Railay- this is a small peninsula on the mainland of Krabi, located not so far from Ao Nang, but separated from it by high cliffs, with almost ideal white sandy beaches, caves and excellent hotels. Thanks to such a powerful combination, they are perhaps the main attraction of Krabi. It is best to come to Railay for several days at once, stopping here and exploring all four beaches: Railay West, Railay East, Pranang and Tonsai (they are all different).

Railay is one of the main attractions of Krabi.

Also noteworthy are the caves and lagoons located inside the rocks. And since there are rocks, then there is a place for rock climbing. Such leisure activities will be highly appreciated by outdoor enthusiasts. And connoisseurs of silence will be happy to know that there are no transport, tuk-tuks on Railay, but only hotels, restaurants, cafes, small shops and excellent beaches.

Practical information about Railay in Krabi:

  • Time to visit: you can spend a full day, but it is better to come for a few days
  • How to get to Railay: by boat from Ao Nang for 100 baht, travel time - 15 minutes

Phi Phi Islands became famous in 2000 thanks to the film "The Beach" starring Leonardo DiCaprio and has only gained popularity since then, becoming one of the best attractions in Krabi. And this glory is not at all exaggerated, which thousands of tourists come to Phi Phi every day to see for themselves. The beaches here are even better than on Railay. I would even compare them with paradise, they are so beautiful and good.

It is interesting to know that the Phi Phi archipelago consists of two big islands- Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Le, as well as several other smaller islands. However, only on the island of Phi Phi Don can you stay in a good hotel, while on the rest there is no housing and they are uninhabited.

Maya Bay in Krabi

Served as a natural setting for the film "The Beach", is located on the small island of Phi Phi (it is called Phi Phi Le). You can sail here by boat and sunbathe on the beach, imagining yourself as the hero of this very film. There are always so many tourists and excursions in Maya Bay that the small island can hardly accommodate everyone who wants to see the most popular attraction of Krabi. Therefore, come as early as possible, preferably before 11 am, and then you can enjoy beach holiday rather than jostling with other tourists on the shore. By the way, in addition to relaxing on a magnificent beach with white sand and swimming in clear turquoise water, here you can go snorkeling and diving, and it’s also interesting to take a boat ride through the picturesque lagoons that are located inside the islands surrounded by high cliffs that have long become the hallmark of Krabi.

I share useful information about excursions to the Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay:

  • Since the Phi Phi Islands are located on the territory of the national park of the same name, visiting all the islands, except for the inhabited Phi Phi Don, is paid. The price of one ticket is 400 baht per person, and for children under 12 years old - half the cost. However, if you came with a guided tour, then keep in mind that the ticket to the national park is already included in its price, so you don’t need to pay extra in this case.
  • It will take you a whole day to explore Phi Phi and Maya Bay if you are traveling from Ao Nang or Phuket as part of an organized tour. But it is much better to settle in and go to Maya Bay beach in the early morning on your own. Trust me, it's worth it!
  • How to get to Phi Phi:
    1) Buy an excursion to Ao Nang for 1500-2500 baht, and a speedboat will take you to Phi Phi in 45 minutes;
    2) Hire a boat and sail on your own from Nopparat Thara Pier (it is located on Ao Nang), or from Rassada Pier in Phuket or Klong Gilad in Krabi Town. The cost of the transfer is from 1500 baht.

Tiger Temple Wat Tam Sua (or Tiger Cave Temple in Krabi)- this is one of the natural attractions of Krabi, located 20 km from Ao Nang in a large cave at the foot of a high cliff, where, according to ancient legend, a real miracle happened. It is also an active Buddhist temple, and at the top of the rock there is an important Buddhist value - the footprint of the Buddha.

During a visit to the tiger temple in Krabi, you can visit the cave temple itself, which surprised me with its purity and even some kind of radiance, and the vipassana monastery (somewhat similar to in northern Thailand), which is located on the other side of the cave among tall trees. But the main highlight, for which tourists come, is the observation deck of the Tiger Temple on the top of the cliff, where 1237 steps lead.

Climb to the top of this sheer cliff- this is a suitable activity only for physically prepared tourists, since the stairs are quite steep, and the steps are high, which are possible, but difficult to overcome. The most enduring tourists will be rewarded with beautiful landscapes that open from the top. panoramic views to the Andaman Sea, as well as to the surrounding fields and hills. There you can also see for yourself that the famous limestone cliffs of Krabi grow not only from the sea, but they are also on the mainland.

Useful information about Wat Tam Sua Tiger Cave Temple in Krabi:

  • Admission fee: free
  • Time to visit: about 40 minutes if you do not go up and about 3-4 hours if you dare to go up. I advise you to start climbing no later than 9 am, otherwise the sun will get very hot later, despite the fact that the stairs themselves are partially in the shade. In addition, after 10:00, hungry wild macaques come out onto the stairs, trying to take away from tourists everything that reminds them of food or simply seems interesting.
  • How to get to Wat Tam Suea: a taxi from Ao Nang for 200-300 baht or on your own on a rented motorbike or car (link) can be reached in 40 minutes. By the way, you can combine a visit to the springs with a visit to the Tiger's Cave.

Information for a visit to the beach of Centara:

  • Admission fee: free
  • Time required: as long as you want (half an hour to a full day)
  • How to get there: by boat from Ao Nang beach for 100 baht or walking along the monkey trail for free.

What else to see in Krabi on your own

Even in Krabi you can see not so popular, but no less beautiful sights. I will give a short list of other most interesting sights of Krabi that you can see on your own, and briefly talk about them.

  • It is the capital of Krabi province. Here you can walk along the old streets of the city, feel and see with your own eyes how the past has frozen among the wooden houses of this relatively small town, sit in cozy cafes. Of course, you should not miss the opportunity to look at the symbol of the entire province - the Krabikha sculpture on the embankment and the two rocks of Khao Khanab Nam on different banks of the strait. You can even climb one of the rocks. I also recommend visiting the beautiful temple of Wat Kaew Korawaram in Krabi Town, it is located in the city center and is famous for its beautiful interior decoration and decoration. See hotels in Krabi Town.
  • Shell graveyard next to Ao Nam Mao beach. Many are disappointed when they see this peculiar attraction, and do not understand what they spent time and money on. Since there is nothing spectacular there, and you have to pay 200 baht for entry. But people interested in geology will have a different opinion.
  • Dragon Crest Trail Khao Ngon Nak(Khao Ngon Nak or Dragon Crest Mountain) starts in the village of Ban Nong Thale on Tab Kaek Beach, about 8 km from Ao Nang. If you are used to spending your holidays actively and going to tracks, do not skip this route. The name of this trail is Tab Kaek Hang(Tab Kak Hang Nature Trail), and its length is 4 km one way. This natural landmark of Krabi can take almost the whole day for inquisitive tourists. So you can lay 2.5-3 hours for a walk to climb the mountain and get to the very top, and at least an hour and a half more on the way back.
From the Dragon Crest, located at an altitude of almost 600 meters above sea level, there are panoramic views of the Andaman Sea coast and the surroundings of Krabi province. It's really beautiful there. There are also viewing platforms and a small waterfall along the way. By the way, there are several hotels in nature at the foot of the mountain.
  • Koh Lanta and Koh Jum- These are islands in the south of Krabi province, which are definitely worth a look for experienced tourists. They are not as popular as the Phi Phi Islands, and the prices here are not so high yet. But here you can go diving, snorkeling, relax on beautiful beaches. Many hotels on these islands are just bamboo huts (bungalows) on the beaches, as in Laos on the islands and in the 4000 island archipelago. But there are options here for a more comfortable stay - see good hotels on Koh Lanta. You can get to Koh Lanta and Koh Jum by ferry from Krabi Town or from the city of Trat. Keep in mind that Koh Jum is an even quieter version of Koh Lanta, and there are far fewer hotels on Koh Jum.
  • Koh Klang Island- This is an island separated by rivers from the mainland near Krabi Town, which is another attraction of the province of Krabi. It is interesting, first of all, because the Muslim families of the province of Krabi live in isolation on this island. Almost all of them are fishermen or farmers. A visit to this standalone Krabi landmark will show tourists how people lived in Thailand a hundred years ago, before Thailand's beaches became a popular tourist destination around the world.
  • Khao Phanom Bencha National Park famous for its rainforest (like) and is also a very curious attraction of Krabi, which is worth seeing on your own. The park is home to bears, leopards and other animals. And there is also something to admire: several beautiful waterfalls located just a couple of kilometers from the entrance. Also, everyone can go on an interesting track to the top of Mount Panom Bencha.

You can go anywhere on a tour of the provinces of Krabi: in all directions there are various types of offers that can be purchased at the hotel, through a travel agency or on sites on the Internet. There are different options for excursions in Krabi - for the whole day, for half a day, or even just for a couple of hours. Inspection of some of the sights of Krabi is combined into one big tour. It is not worth booking such trips in advance (for example, when buying a tour to Krabi or Phuket), since it is easier to come to any travel agency on your own during your holiday in Thailand. main street Ao Nang and ask about their prices and offers.

  • As I said above, the best way to get to know mainland Krabi is to go on an excursion to the Tiger Temple Wat Tam Wua and the hot springs and Emerald Lake for the whole day. This excursion to Krabi seemed to me one of the most interesting, and it was good to change the situation for one day and escape from a beach holiday.
  • To get to know the nearest islands off the coast, you should choose the most popular excursion, within which they take you to three islands - Chicken, Poda and Tub - and to Pranang Beach, which is located on the Railay Peninsula. This trip takes half a day and costs 500-700 baht.
  • I highly recommend to all tourists who are vacationing in or on Ao Nang to go on an excursion to the Phi Phi Islands. Of course, the best option would be to stay for a few days in one of the hotels on the island of Phi Phi Don, in order to get to know the other islands of this archipelago in detail from there. Having bought an excursion to Ao Nang, you will set off early in the morning from the coast to the sea on a boat and spend the whole day on excursions to the Phi Phi Islands in Krabi. We ourselves went on a speedboat, walked around Phi Phi Don, swam along the caves and lagoons of Phi Phi Le, sunbathed at Maya Bay and snorkeled at one of the best spots of the Phi Phi Islands.

Of course, there are other excursions in Krabi, for example, to Hong Island. Ask the travel agency for details. Also from Krabi and Ao Nang you can go to the neighboring provinces - Phang Nga and see the famous island of James Bond, or to Phuket to admire other natural wonders of southern Thailand. Booking an excursion to Krabi is not so difficult: the flow there is almost like the best. Everything happens quickly and efficiently, you just have to want it.

Active travelers who come to rest in Krabi can be satisfied, because in addition to beaches and sea excursions to the sights of Krabi, there are many other interesting things to do and entertainment for every taste.

Here are some things to do in Krabi:

  • Rafting
  • Kayaking
  • Spas and massage parlors
  • Thai cooking lessons
  • Ethnographic excursions
  • Trekking and hiking
  • Visiting national parks and reserves
  • Rock climbing
  • Hanging out on Ao Nang Beach
  • Shopping in Krabi Town

What else can you see in Krabi during a long vacation? You can go to neighboring provinces to see their sights too:

  • Firstly, it is worth visiting the province of Phuket, having visited the island of Phuket in the west of Thailand.
  • Secondly, see the interesting sights of Phang Nga province, which is located northwest of Krabi.
  • Thirdly, head south to Trang Province, where there are several beautiful islands, where you can also have a good rest. Or to the province of Satun, most famous fabulous island Koh Lipe is considered by many to be the best among the Thai islands.

Let me tell you a little more about phang nga province:

  • As I said, you can go from Krabi on an excursion to phang nga bay and see James Bond Island or Koh Ping Kan, as well as lagoons, underwater caves, mangroves and waterfalls.
  • All this wealth is included in phang nga national marine park , and a visit costs 500 baht per person. But you can also do it yourself by renting a motorbike or renting a car and going on an independent trip to the south of Thailand. All this is very interesting and informative, just do not forget that Thailand also has its own strict rules and laws that it is better not to break. For example, in no case do not feed the fish in the national park, otherwise you can even go to jail for it.
  • In Phang Nga Town, you can hire a longtail boat or join a tour and drive around all the main attractions of Phang Nga Bay. You can also try to explore the bay on your own in a kayak.
  • And to see the national park Tanbok Korani and the skull cave (Tam Hua Gralok), you need to come to the town of Ao Luk.
  • Wat Tham Suwankua- this is a cave temple that is also worth seeing, especially the large statue of the reclining Buddha,
  • Somdet Phra Sinakharin Park will be of interest to all nature lovers. This park has two entrances: the main one is less interesting, but the White House Hotel is very picturesque.
  • Ko Yao- These are two islands near Krabi, located closer to Phuket. The islands of Yao Yai and Yao Noi are inhabited mainly by Muslim Thais. If you want silence, then you can come here and relax from the crowds of tourists, ride a bike, snorkel, sunbathe on the beaches (but do not forget that, according to local customs, it is better not to walk in swimsuits, like on). The best beaches are Hat Pa Sai and Hat Paradise. You can get to Yao Island from Krabi by boat for 500 baht, travel time 1.5 hours, or 700 baht and just 1 hour by boat from Talen Pier.
  • Coast Khao Lak are endless kilometers of sandy beaches with rocks. An excellent choice for family travelers. It is from here that ferries depart for the Similan Islands.
  • Similan Islands and Surin Island are uninhabited islands in western Thailand. You can sail here only from November to April. And it is worth doing it for the sake of the virgin nature of the islands. Here everyone lives either in tents or in small houses without special amenities. All this is done for the sake of beauty. Tours to Surin and the Similan Islands can be bought both in Krabi and Khao Lak. There are no hotels on the Similans and Surin Island. But very close you can settle on Khao Lak.

The national park deserves special mention. Khao Sok, which is located in the province of Surat Thani, north of Krabi. It is worth coming here for the largest virgin forest southern Thailand and that, if there is a chance, to look at the animals in the wild. Elephants, tigers, bears and other animals are found in Khao Sok Park. Fans of hiking, canoeing and bird watching (birdwatching) should not miss the opportunity and be sure to visit Khao Sok Park. The best time for this is from January to April. See hotels near Khao Sok Park.

hot waterfall

It is also located near Krabi Town, and you also need to come here early in the morning, before 8 o'clock. At first, I personally did just that, and then one day it turned out that we arrived there already at 9 o'clock, and it was a disappointment ... A crowd of people, all natural pools with hot water (40 degrees), naturally formed from stones, were busy ... both Thais and tourists. Early in the morning here is really very, very cool!

The water in these hot springs is much more salty than in others, and this is their peculiarity. There are several reservoirs here, with different water temperatures, there are even very hot ones.
