Is the weight of hand luggage added on the plane. New rules for carrying hand luggage on an airplane: what you can take and what you can’t. What to do if hand luggage is oversized

The issue of baggage in air transport worries a lot of tourists, because the rules change all the time. What dimensions of suitcases are allowed on board, how much can one free piece weigh, what are the rules for carrying hand luggage- all these issues should be worked out in advance so that there are no problems with checking in luggage during boarding.

Today, airlines transport cargo using two systems of measures:

In the weight concept, the total load is taken as the basis, regardless of the number of seats, and in the peace concept, the carriage of 1 free seat per passenger is determined (hand luggage is not taken into account). The number of seats system limits the standard dimensions of a suitcase to 158 cm, and in the weight system this figure rises to 203 cm.

What is the weight of one suitcase in checked baggage for free?

The weight concept defines a flight with luggage no heavier than 23 kg in economy class, a business class passenger can take 32 kg on board, up to 40 can be carried in the first. And the number of seats system determines the baggage allowance at no extra charge for economy 23 kg.

If you have a family trip, then it is quite convenient to take one suitcase for each of you and, in total, carry a larger amount of cargo without payment than in the weight concept. However, the weight of the suitcases is not summed up, that is, from the underweight in one suitcase and the overweight in the other, airport employees will not derive the arithmetic mean.

Exceeding the weight norm will entail additional expenses, often considerable. Additionally, 10 kg of cargo can be transported per child under 2 years old.

Attention! Many carriers have Economy Basic, Promo or Light tariffs, which provide for a fee for any baggage.

Permissible dimensions of a suitcase for hand luggage

It is very convenient to carry a small suitcase, which will be considered as hand luggage, along with you in the cabin. This is beneficial for several reasons:

In the cabin of the aircraft, one economy class passenger can take one piece of hand luggage with him for free, it is allowed to carry two in the first and business class. The dimensions of a suitcase that can be taken into the passenger compartment, by the sum of the sides, should not exceed 115 cm. Suitcases of size S (cabin size) are ideal for this.

Standard hand luggage dimensions are no more than 55 × 40 × 25 cm. Weight must not exceed 10 kg. These are generally accepted rules. However, each carrier has its own standards, which may differ from the standard ones by 3–5 cm in any direction. Exceeding the norms will entail a surcharge, which differs for different airlines.

Important! Check the carrier's website before flying allowable dimensions free carry-on baggage and its maximum weight.

What if the size and weight exceed the norm?

It is not always possible to fill the suitcase so that the weight does not exceed the prescribed. If the luggage is heavier than the cherished 23 kg (the norm for business class passengers), then it will not get on board the aircraft without additional payment for a few kg from above. The tariff is set by each carrier separately and can range from 10 to 100 euros in different cases.

According to existing standards, a passenger has the right to carry a suitcase with dimensions of 158 cm (203 according to the weight system), luggage of an infant under 2 years old with a sum of sides of 115 cm or sports equipment no more than 210 cm free of charge. Excess will also entail financial costs in favor of the carrier company according to her estimates.

Transportation of suitcases with fragile and heavy items

If the baggage is overweight or the dimensions do not meet the requirements stipulated by the rules, then such cargo is defined as heavy. Its transportation is possible only by prior agreement with the air carrier.

Important! On the day of departure, you will have to arrive at the airport in advance so that you have free time to check in your luggage.

According to the same principle, baggage with oversized items is transported:

Suitcases with fragile items are marked with special tags, clearance will also require a margin of time. If the breakable cargo fits the dimensions of hand luggage, you can take it with you to the cabin and not worry about the conditions of its transportation.

Rules of different airlines

Air carriers on their websites post information about the rules of baggage, the maximum allowable dimensions, including for hand luggage. We have collected for you information about these standards from the most relevant for Russian tourists airlines. The following are the dimensions of baggage for free transportation in economy class.

Aeroflot will take on board checked baggage with dimensions not exceeding 158 cm, hand luggage 55×40×25 cm 1 piece up to 10 kg.

Checked free baggage 1 piece with dimensions not exceeding 158 cm and 23 kg with Aegean Airlines, Air Astana (20 kg), Air Berlin, Air France, Alitalia, American Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Finnair, Iberia, Lufthansa.

S7 Airlines, Utair, Czech Airlines have more centimeters limiting baggage - 203. Ural Airlines indicate specific allowable dimensions - 50 × 50 × 100 cm, while for British Airways - 90 × 75 × 43. Qatar Airways has increased cargo dimensions to 300 centimeters.

Hand luggage standard 55×40×25 is negotiated when flying with S7 Airlines, Ural Airlines, Utair. Option 55×40×23 point Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines. In Aegean Airlines, Iberia, Finnair, Air Astana, the maximum dimensions are 56x45x25, Qatar Airways indicates dimensions up to 50x37x25, Emirates up to 55x38x20 cm.

The information provided is only general rules for the carriage of baggage and important tips for our passengers. Each airline independently and individually determines the standard quantity and weight of luggage allowed on a given route. Therefore, in order to obtain specific information, each passenger must familiarize himself with the transportation of a particular carrier.

Checked luggage is transported in the luggage compartment of the aircraft. Passengers hand it over at the time of check-in. Such cargo must be properly packed and closed, and its contents securely protected from pressure damage from other suitcases. It must also comply with the restrictions imposed by individual air carriers.

A baggage tag is issued for each suitcase and bag, the other end of which is given to the passenger. It is the basis for the identification of luggage upon arrival and complaints in case of damage or loss. From this point on, the responsibility for it is on the side of the carrier.

Carriage allowances

There are no internationally established rules regarding the weight of luggage. Allowed baggage weight on the plane varies depending on the company the passenger uses. However, all airlines have their own franchise system - the weight and amount of baggage that can be carried in the hold of the aircraft.

carrier rule

This rule states that on multi-airline flights, the baggage rules of the airline that travels the geographically longest and longest leg of the journey apply.

Dimensions

The amount of luggage depends on the type, booking class and route:

By Masashi Yanagiya Flickr
  • 150 cm - the maximum baggage size for most airlines, calculated based on the sum of three values;
  • 20-32 kg is this weight range for budget airlines;
  • 1-4 - allowed number of suitcases.

For security reasons, checked baggage is subject to certain restrictions.

  • Companies that operate regular flights.

The free baggage allowance depends on the reserved class of service and passenger status:

  1. Economy class - 1 baggage up to 23 kg.
  2. Economy premium class - 2 suitcases, each 23 kg.
  3. Business class - 2 luggage, each up to 32 kg.
  4. First class - 3 bags, each up to 32 kg.
  • The franchise of airlines making charter flights is about 15 kg.

Some companies charge the weight of luggage, including the deductible. Therefore, in order to avoid unpleasant surprises, it is necessary to clarify the permitted weight and fees for exceeding the dimensions of luggage. There are also loyalty cards in international airlines that allow you to carry more things for free, regardless of the class of service.

Some restrictions

It is forbidden to separate weight limits. For example, if two passengers are flying, who can carry baggage of 15 kg, in such a situation it is impossible to take one baggage weighing 20 and the other 10 kg. It is not allowed to combine weight restrictions - for two people of 15 kg each, you cannot take a suitcase weighing 30 kg.

Many companies turn a blind eye to a common suitcase exceeding the weight limit for 1 person and are rarely outraged, but still you should be more careful and take an extra bag to shift some of the cargo into it if you start having problems and requests to pay for excess weight.

Suitcases for children

Checking luggage for infants is prohibited. If a child is traveling without a separate seat for less than two years, you can register for him:

  • baggage weighing less than 12 kg and dimensions not exceeding 55x35x25 cm;
  • checked packages up to 10 kg (for children's tickets).

Children aged two and over enjoy the same rates as adults.

Children's transport (sleeping baskets, strollers, car seats) can be taken on board as hand luggage, provided there is free space. Different conditions apply for various kinds and types of fixtures:

  • the stroller should not exceed the dimensions of 15x30x100 cm;
  • collapsible equipment that replaces hand luggage must not exceed 55x35x25cm.

Otherwise, the items are packed and checked in as checked baggage. Any transport must be packed in a case that completely hides it.

What can you take into the hold of the aircraft

Food

Regarding transportation food products in the hold, then they can be transported well packed, in inseparable packages to prevent possible disasters (perishable and fragile goods are transported at the peril and risk of passengers).

Animal products (meat, milk) may contain pathogenic substances that are responsible for the transmission of infectious diseases, so their transportation must comply with the legislation of the countries where they are imported.

Alcohol

When entering Russia, one passenger can carry a total of 5 liters of alcohol with a strength of less than 700C. If the norm is exceeded, it is mandatory to have a receipt for its purchase, declare the goods and pay taxes.

On all domestic flights of the country, adult passengers carry drinks with a strength of up to 240C without restrictions. In some countries, the import-call of alcoholic beverages has its own rules, which may change and be adjusted.

Electronic devices and elements

You can carry any electronic devices in your checked baggage, including mobile phone, laptop computer, tablet devices, MP3 player, hair straightener, cameras, electric shaver.

Oversized dimensions

Baggage exceeding 158 cm is considered large and can be carried at an additional cost. However, in any case, its weight should not exceed 32 kg. If the luggage exceeds 300 cm and weighs more than 32 kg, it must be registered as a freight shipment.

Special cargo

Luggage, which, due to size or content, falls out of the norm, is called special. It can be sports equipment, musical instruments or animals. Some airlines, under certain conditions, allow special baggage to be taken as hand luggage on the plane.

Musical instruments

Many carriers allow delicate musical instruments in the cabin, such as guitars, which must be packed in a padded case. All other instruments that are oversized but no larger than a cello must be carried in the hold of the aircraft.

By Sam Howzit Flickr

Large animals must be kept in special air-conditioned areas of the cargo hold. Their transportation is carried out in a closed container of sufficient volume for a particular pet, in which it is necessary to provide access to drinking water. An additional fee is charged for transportation.

Sports equipment

Baggage that is associated with sports is called sports luggage. It can be skis, diving equipment, a bicycle. Usually such cargo is very large and heavy, and most often transported in the cargo area of the aircraft. However, smaller items such as a skateboard are also not allowed as carry-on baggage as they can be used as impact weapons.

Additional fees apply for sports equipment that requires special packaging. Transportation of sporting and hunting weapons must be registered. Ammunition must be transported separately from weapons, accompanied by the appropriate permits.

Adjustable number of items:

  1. Perfumes and aerosols must not exceed 2 kg or 2 liters per person and 0.5 kg or 0.5 liters per item.
  2. Some rules for packing luggage

To prevent the suitcase from getting stuck on the conveyor belt, make sure that all loose straps are tied or removed, all latches are securely fastened, and retractable handles are removed.

The rules governing free hand luggage on an airplane are determined by airlines, and most of them impose strict restrictions on the size and weight of bags. Aeroflot is no exception. When flying on board an aircraft of this air carrier, it is worth familiarizing yourself with the 2020 rules for the allowable dimensions and weight of hand luggage in advance - this will allow you to avoid problems during the inspection of things.

Dimensions of allowable hand luggage

On board an aircraft, you have every right to take a bag or briefcase, the sum of the three sides of which (width, as well as length and height) does not exceed 115 centimeters. For example, it is allowed to take a hiking bag with parameters 40x55x20, or a small suitcase with dimensions 55x35x25 into the cabin of the aircraft. A smaller sum of measurements is possible, a larger one is not.

These restrictions apply exclusively on Aeroflot flights, while codeshare flights with other airlines are subject to the rules established by the partner carrier.

Weight of free hand luggage

The permitted weight carried on board an Aeroflot aircraft is determined by the class of the passenger seat. In the business lounge, it is permissible to take a bag weighing up to 15 kilograms, while in economy / comfort classes, the maximum weight of your suitcase should not exceed 10 kg.

Allowed Extras

The concept of "hand luggage" includes bags with handles, large backpacks or suitcases. Besides, you have the right to take other things on the plane:

  • A small handbag;
  • Briefcase or borset;
  • Cane or umbrella;
  • One piece of warm clothing;
  • Periodical or book;
  • Bouquet of flowers;
  • mobile electronics;
  • Baby food;
  • Cradle for a child up to 2 years;
  • crutches;
  • Bag with items purchased from Duty Free.

The things listed in the list are not weighed and are not labeled during the inspection.

Dimensions and weight of hand luggage in other airlines

In order to improve the comfort of passengers during the flight, S7 Airlines has imposed the following restrictions on the carriage of things on board its liners:

  • In economy class, passengers can carry a bag or a suitcase with a weight not exceeding 10 kg. Dimensions must correspond to the dimensions: 55x40x20 cm.
  • In the business lounge, you are entitled to two seats with the same dimensions, but their total weight should not exceed 15 kg.

To make sure that your bag is compliant, you can check to see if it fits in the restrictive boxes posted near the check-in counters at the airport.

The airline allows you to carry in addition not only cradles, but also strollers for older children. However, the dimensions of the cradle should not exceed the dimensions of 55x40x20 cm. Walking sticks must be checked in as luggage.

The rules for transporting hand luggage on UTair aircraft are similar to the S7 restrictions: the sum of the sides and the width of the bag should not exceed 115 cm. At the same time, its allowable weight is different: in the economy cabin, one bag weighing up to 10 kg is allowed, while in comfort and business citizens are entitled to two seats, each weighing 10 kg.

It is worth considering that this rule does not apply to a child under the age of two years: regardless of the class in which he flies, he is entitled to only one seat weighing up to 10 kg.

Because the Russian airline Pobeda positions itself as a low-cost airline, the cost of its tickets is much lower than that of other carriers. However, passengers have to endure the rather inconvenient - free transportation on board hand luggage administration is not provided (the cancellation of this service took place in 2015).

Hand luggage means bags or suitcases, and items from the additional list above will not require payment from you.

The fare for one piece of hand luggage in the cabin of the aircraft depends on the place of payment: on the airline's website you will have to pay 999 rubles, to the registrar at the airport to pay 1500 rubles, and upon landing you will be required to pay 2000 rubles.

Ural Airlines

In the economy cabin on board a Ural Airlines aircraft, you can carry hand luggage free of charge, the dimensions of which are not more than 55x40x20 cm, and it must weigh up to 10 kg.

In the business lounge, it is allowed to take two of the same seats, but the total weight of both bags should not exceed 15 kg. These are the norms for adult passengers - children under two years old are entitled to only one seat weighing no more than 10 kg, regardless of the ticket class.

As you can see, the dimensions of the allowable hand luggage and its weight are important parameters that should be clarified in advance, even before the start of the collection. If you want to avoid disputes with receptionists before boarding, follow the rules of the airlines and carry things in bags and suitcases that meet the established parameters.
