Sights of Engelberg:

Benedictine monastery

The Benedictine Monastery is the only attraction within the boundaries of the town of Engelberg.

History of the Engelberg Monastery

The monastery was founded in 1120 by Blessed Conrad, Earl of Seldenburg. The first abbot of the monastery was St. Adelhelm, a monk from the Abbey of St. Blaise in the Black Forest, who led the founder to the monastic lifestyle. Various emperors and popes gave the new monastery many rights and privileges. The first among them were Pope Callistus II (in 1124) and Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV. The Abbey was directly subordinate to the Pope and the Holy See. This continued until the formation of the Swiss Federation in 1602, when Engelberg united with other Swiss monasteries and became subject to the president and supreme chapter.

The heyday of Engelberg Abbey

In the spiritual hierarchy, the abbots of Engelberg were quasi-bishops for all their vassals, including the city that gradually grew around the monastery walls. The monastery had supreme power and absolute authority over a large territory covering 150 towns and villages, which were considered to belong to the abbey in accordance with the bull of Pope Gregory IX in 1236. The abbey held these and other rights until the French Revolution in 1798, after which it lost almost all the privileges.

The preeminent position which the abbey occupied for many centuries was somewhat shaken by religious and political changes during the Reformation, especially by the rapid spread of Zwingli's teachings. This caused further reductions in the abbey's privileges.

Restoration of the abbey

The problems and vicissitudes of fate that the monastery had to go through ended with the arrival of the abbot Benedixtus Sigrist in the 17th century, who was rightly called the restorer of the abbey. He managed to return the alienated possessions and rights. His work was continued by his successor, under whom monastic discipline and learning flourished with redoubled force. The library, which is said to have contained over twenty thousand volumes and two hundred manuscripts, was unfortunately plundered by the French in 1798. Ironically (due to the abbey's desire to preserve all knowledge), Martin Luther's complete set of books can still be found in the library to this day.

The monastery buildings were almost completely destroyed by a severe fire in 1729. The abbey was significantly rebuilt, but retained the beauty of the architecture. Inner chambers The monastery is decorated with incredibly finely carved wooden panels, and on its territory you can see the Baroque monastery church.
