Tower of Babel. All about Burj Khalifa: features, prices, tips What is located in the Burj Khalifa building

Burj Khalifa is the tallest structure ever to exist in the world. The exact height of the structure is 828 m. The ruler of the Emirate of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashed Al Maktoum, opening the 828-meter skyscraper, known throughout the world as the Burj Dubai (Dubai Tower), renamed it, dedicating the building to the President of the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa Ibn Zaid an-Nahyan.

01. Burj Khalifa was designed as a “city within a city” - with its own lawns, boulevards and parks. The total cost of the structure is about $1.5 billion. The author of the project is American architect Adrian Smith, who already has experience in designing similar structures. Burj Khalifa is a key element of the new business center In Dubai. Inside the complex there are hotels, apartments, offices and shopping centers. According to the project, a hotel will be located on the lower 37 floors, and 700 luxury apartments will occupy floors from 45 to 108. Most of the space is reserved for office rooms.

02. A special grade of concrete was developed especially for the Burj Khalifa, which can withstand temperatures up to +50 °C. Fill it only at night, and add ice to the solution.

03. Construction of the skyscraper began in 2004 and proceeded at a speed of 1-2 floors per week. Concrete work was completed after the construction of the 160th floor, followed by the assembly of a 180-meter spire from metal structures. The building's fire system makes it possible to evacuate all its occupants in no more than 32 minutes.

04. The tower will completely independently generate electricity for itself: for this, a 61-meter wind-driven turbine will be used, as well as an array of solar panels (partially located on the walls of the tower) with a total area of about 15 thousand m². In addition, the building is equipped with special solar protection and reflective glass panels that will reduce heating of the rooms inside, reducing the need for air conditioning.

05. In March 2006 The brutality of the supervisors provoked a pogrom at the vast construction site of the Burj Dubai tower. 2,500 exhausted workers were waiting for very late buses after their shifts when security began to nag them. Enraged workers beat up the guards and began to destroy the construction headquarters, burning branded cars, smashing offices and equipment, and breaking into safes.

06. The next morning, the workers refused to work and intended to go on strike until their employer, Al Naboodah Laing O'Rourke, raised wages and improved working conditions. Thousands of construction workers at the new airport terminal joined the strike.

07. The height of the building (828 m, 160 floors) was kept secret until the opening. According to engineers, this did not immediately become an advertising ploy: already during the construction process, it became clear several times that the skyscraper could be made taller than planned. The fundamental obstacle to endless upward growth was not a technical, but an economic factor: the need to sell a huge amount of space, in the case of the Burj Khalifa - mainly residential ( total area buildings - 557.5 thousand m2). Allegedly, this is why the tower has such a slender silhouette - to reduce the usable space inside.

08. The local press calls the skyscraper the “Tower of Pride.” At the height of the economic crisis, the name “Burj Dubai” was taken away from the tower, renaming it in honor of the President of the UAE and the Emir of neighboring Abu Dhabi: Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed El Nahyan, who issued a $10 billion loan to Dubai.

09. The opening ceremony took place on January 4, 2010. The building was planned to open on September 9, 2009, simultaneously with the opening of the Dubai Metro, but was postponed to January 2010 due to financial problems of the developer.

Burj Khalifa is the highlight of Dubai and one of the most recognizable buildings in the world. The majestic skyscraper rose to 828 meters and 163 floors, having been the tallest structure for seven years. It is located on the shores of the Persian Gulf and can be seen from anywhere in the city, leaving tourists in silent shock.

Burj Khalifa: history

Dubai has not always been as modern and luxurious as it is now. In the eighties, it was a modest city with traditional two-story buildings, and the flow of petrodollars in some twenty years made it a giant of steel, stone and glass.

The Burj Khalifa skyscraper was built over six years. Construction began in 2004 with amazing speed: two floors were built in one week. The shape was specially made asymmetrical and reminiscent of a stalagmite, so that the building was stable and did not sway from the winds. It was decided to cover the entire building with special thermostatic panels, which significantly reduced energy costs.

The fact is that in the United United Arab Emirates the temperature often rises to 50 degrees, so saving money on air conditioning played an important role. The base of the building was a foundation with hanging piles, which were 45 meters long.

It was decided to entrust the construction to the well-known Samsung corporation, which took into account all climatic and geological features terrain. Especially for the Burj Khalifa, a special concrete solution was developed that can withstand high temperatures. It was mixed exclusively at night with pieces of ice added to the water.

The company hired about twelve thousand workers who agreed to work in terrible, unsanitary conditions for paltry money - from four to seven dollars a day, depending on their qualifications. The designers knew the golden rule that no construction fits within the planned budget, and therefore decided to save on labor.

The total cost of building the tower cost more than one and a half billion dollars. For a long time the planned height was kept secret. Many were confident that the Burj Khalifa would reach a kilometer, but developers were afraid of the difficulties with implementation retail space, so we stopped at 828 meters. Perhaps now they regret their decision, because, despite the economic crisis, all the premises were purchased in a very short time.

Internal structure

Burj Khalifa was created as a vertical city. It contains inside:

  • hotel;
  • residential apartments;
  • office rooms;
  • restaurants;
  • observation deck.

Entering the tower, it is difficult not to feel the pleasant microclimate created thanks to the special structure of ventilation and air conditioning. The creators took into account all the features of the human body, so being inside is pleasant and comfortable. The building is filled with an unobtrusive and light aroma.

The 304-room hotel is designed for tourists who are not concerned about their own budget. The interior design is amazing, because for a long time it was developed by Giorgio Armani himself. Decorated in warm colors with unique furniture and unusual decorative items, the interior is an example of Italian elegance.

The hotel has 8 restaurants serving Mediterranean, Japanese and Arabic cuisine. Also present: night club, swimming pool, SPA center, banquet halls, boutiques and flower salon. Room rates start at $750 per night.

Burj Khalifa has 900 apartments. It is curious that the Indian billionaire Shetty completely bought the hundredth floor with three huge apartments. Eyewitnesses note that the room is immersed in luxury and chic.

Observation platforms

On the 124th floor of the skyscraper there is a unique observation deck offering a picturesque panorama of the capital of the UAE. It's called "At the Top". As travelers say, “If you haven’t been to the site, you haven’t been to Dubai.”

Getting there is not so easy - tickets sell out very quickly. Keep this in mind and purchase your seat in advance; a ticket will cost approximately $27. In addition to the beauty of the ultra-modern city, you can enjoy the view of the night sky using telescopes located on the site. Climb to a viewing height of 505 meters and enjoy incredible views from above, and also take a memorable photo from the pearl of Dubai. Feel the freedom and greatness of the human hands that built this masterpiece.

The popularity of the place led to the opening of a second observation deck four years later. It was located higher - on the 148th floor, and became the tallest in the world. There are screens installed here that give tourists the opportunity to virtually walk around the city.

Excursions

Remember that pre-purchased tickets will significantly save your budget and will cost you three times less. It is best to purchase them on the official website of the skyscraper or at the main passage to the Burj Khalifa elevators, as well as with the help of agencies that organize excursions. The last option may be simpler, but somewhat more expensive.

It is worth purchasing a telescope card: with its help you will get the opportunity to see any corner of the city up close and get acquainted with the historical eras of Dubai. If you plan to visit the tower with a group of friends, then it is enough to buy only one card, as you can use it several times.

Save some money and spend it on an audio tour about the making of a skyscraper. You can listen to it in one of the available languages, including Russian. The Burj Khalifa tour lasts an hour and a half, but if you don't have enough time, you can easily stay longer.

  • The building has 57 elevators, they move at speeds of up to 18 m/s.
  • The average temperature in the rooms is 18 degrees.
  • Special tinted thermal glass helps maintain an acceptable temperature and reflect the sun's rays, preventing the entry of dust and unpleasant odors.
  • Autonomous power supply system is provided by huge solar panels and wind generators.
  • The building has 2,957 parking spaces.
  • Due to poor working conditions during construction, workers rioted and caused half a billion dollars in damage to the city.
  • The Atmosphere restaurant is located at a record height of 442 m.

At the foot of the Burj Khalifa there is the most powerful fountain in the world, the jets of which rise 100 meters upward.

Faktrum tells Interesting Facts about Burj Khalifa.

1. Tallest building in the world

The height of the Burj Khalifa is 828 meters, and the height of the second tallest building in the world (Shanghai Tower) is 632 meters. The difference is more than obvious. Also, Burj Khalifa is three times taller than the Eiffel Tower.

2. Inside the building

Those who think that the Burj Khalifa is very impressive from the outside have simply never been inside the skyscraper. The highest observation deck is at an altitude of 452 meters. The building has a total of 164 floors, 1 of which is underground, and as many as 58 elevators that travel at a speed of 10 meters per second (these are some of the fastest elevators in the world). Burj Khalifa also has 2,957 parking spaces, 304 hotels and 904 apartments.

3. The skyscraper was designed by Americans and built by a South Korean company

While the Burj Khalifa is located in Dubai (the skyscraper's original name was Burj Dubai), the building was designed by the American firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. Engineers from Chicago have created a special support structure that resembles a three-rayed star. The construction of the building was entrusted to the South Korean company Samsung Engineering and Construction.

4. Several records

It is the tallest free-standing building, the building with the highest residential floor, the building with the most floors, the building with the highest elevators and the second highest observation deck (the highest observation deck is at Canton Tower).

5. What was needed for construction

In order to build such a titanic building, it took a lot of time and effort (namely, 6 years and 22 million man-hours). On especially busy days, more than 12,000 workers were on the construction site at one time.

6. Huge weight

An incredible amount of materials were required to construct the building. So much aluminum was used that it would be enough to create 5 Airbus A380s. 55,000 tons of reinforcing steel and 110,000 tons of concrete were also used. This is approximately equal to the weight of 100,000 elephants. And if you take and stack the reinforcement from a building in a row, it would stretch over a quarter of the Earth.

7. Heat resistance

Dubai is very hot in the summer average temperature here it is 41 degrees. Naturally, a building built in this country must withstand extreme temperature changes. That's why more than 300 Chinese experts were hired to develop a cladding system that could protect against local temperatures.

8. Energy consumption

Naturally, living in such a huge building requires a monstrous amount of resources. For example, Burj Khalifa uses about 950,000 liters of water every day. The building also consumes a huge amount of electricity (about as much as 360,000 hundred-watt light bulbs “eat”).

9. Skyscraper washing

How do you clean and wash 26,000 glass panels that always look perfect? This is done by 12 machines, each weighing about 13 tons, moving along special rails on the outside of the building. The cars are serviced by 36 people.

10. Floral design

The Burj Khalifa's design was inspired by the Hymenocallis, a flower that has long petals radiating out from the center. The three wings of the Burj Khalifa spread out to the sides like these petals.

A very important point. There are two observation decks on the Burj Khalifa. This is important, since the price of tickets differs significantly, and Prime hours ( best watch for visiting) are different.

AT THE TOP– these are observation platforms on the 124th (open) and 125th (indoor) floors, height – 452 meters.

– this is an observation deck on the 148th floor (open), height – 555 meters.

To understand why this is so, we will dive a little into the history of the Burj Khalifa, although we will tell the whole story in facts and figures in the second part of this article. At first, there was no upper observation deck at all; the platform on the 124th floor (452 meters), which was the highest in the world, was sufficient.

However, in December 2011 (a year after the opening of the Burj Khalifa), the Canton Tower opened in Guangzhou (China) with an observation deck at an altitude of 488 meters, Dubai residents were left without a record.

On October 15, 2014, Dubai regained its record by opening a site on the 148th floor (555 meters). But already in June 2016, an observation deck opened on the Shanghai Tower (China) at an altitude of 561 meters, and the Dubai residents again lost their record.

Now Dubai has nothing to “cover” with. Let us remind you that the Burj Khalifa building is only 585 meters high, and the remaining 243 meters is a large metal spire, in which, according to all safety standards, an observation deck cannot be organized.

Opening hours

Seven days a week, from 8-30 to 22-00. The entrance closes at 21-15.

Prime hours for AT THE TOP venues – from 15-00 to 18-30.

Prime hours for the AT THE TOP SKY site – from 9-30 to 18-00.

Prime hours are subject to change by the administration.

Ticket price

There are two types of tickets - Immediate Entry Admission and General Admission. Children under 4 years old are always free. Further, all prices are given in dirhams; for the current exchange rate, see our article “”.

Immediate Entry Admission. This ticket is purchased at the box office on the day of the visit. It would seem that the simplest and most convenient option.

In practice, this worst option. Firstly, this type of ticket is sold only on AT THE TOP, and AT THE TOP SKY does not have them at all.

Secondly, tickets may simply not be available, because a limited number of people are allowed onto the observation decks.

Thirdly, the price is very high: 315 dirhams, versus 224 and 149 dirhams for a ticket purchased on the website. Below is a table of prices for Immediate Entry tickets.

General Admission. This ticket can be purchased on the official website https://tickets.atthetop.ae/. When purchasing a ticket, you need to select the date and time of your visit. Below is a table of prices for General Admission tickets.

General Admission tickets are available online 90 days prior to your visit date. Payment is made by VISA, MasterCard and JCB cards. For purchasing a ticket online, an additional fee of 5 dirhams and 5% VAT will be charged.

And one more important point. You cannot buy a ticket for children separately, only together with at least one adult, the system does not allow this. If you are traveling with a child, buy all tickets at once in one transaction. Don’t forget about the children’s ticket, otherwise you won’t be able to buy it later in a separate transaction.

Probably, Burj Khalifa can be safely given another record - for the most expensive tickets to the observation decks. For comparison, look at Shanghai with its record high this moment Shanghai Tower observation deck costs 180 (at the time of writing, $27).

Special offers

When purchasing on the website, you can use combo tickets, some of which are very profitable.

AT THE TOP SKY + Dubai Fountain Boardwalk. Together you buy a ticket to the AT THE TOP SKY venue and watch the show from a special platform at the foot of the Burj Khalifa (pictured below, click to enlarge). Valid from 19-00, price – 380 dirhams.

A ticket to AT THE TOP SKY costs Dh378, and viewing the fountains from the platform can be purchased separately for Dh20. This results in savings, albeit small ones.

ATT + Dubai Aquarium. This is a great offer. You get tickets for AT THE TOP (not during Prime hours) and . Price – 213 dirhams.

A ticket to the Burj Khalifa costs 149 dirhams, a ticket to the aquarium costs from 175 dirhams. This results in significant savings.

FAST TRACK. This ticket allows you to go everywhere without queuing. Price – 300 dirhams, regardless of age. This ticket can only be used to enter the AT THE TOP venue; this type of ticket is not available for the AT THE TOP SKY venue. If you see someone skipping the line, don’t be surprised or indignant, he bought himself a FAST TRACK ticket.

There are several more combo tickets, but we won’t talk about them in detail now, since we don’t think they are very popular. If you are interested, you can read their description on the website tickets.atthetop.ae. If you don’t know English, use the browser’s built-in translator, it will be more or less clear.

The Burj Khalifa building has broken all world height records. The tower was built in the crisis year of 2010. It bears the name of the UAE President, Khalifa, who allocated a huge amount for the construction of the skyscraper. Before this, the building was simply called "Burj Dubai". Translated from Arabic it means "Dubai Tower". The Burj Khalifa skyscraper, whose height is crazy, has 160 floors. On the 124th there is an observation deck from which you can see the whole of Dubai at a glance.

Burj Khalifa skyscraper: height

This building broke all world records in height. It surpassed the Empire State in New York. Its height is 443 m. The Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia are also inferior to the skyscraper (452 m). The Russian Ostankino Tower, 452 m high, was also left behind. In terms of housing stock, the first place in the world before the construction of the legendary Dubai skyscraper belonged to the Taipei 101 skyscraper located in Taiwan. The height of the Burj Khalifa skyscraper is 828 m.

Record construction time

Despite the crisis and financial difficulties, construction was carried out at a record pace. On average, two floors were expelled every seven days. Not a single tower crane could cope with delivering concrete to such a huge height in the required quantity. The solution was pumped up the pipes under high pressure. Construction of the skyscraper did not stop, even when other projects were suspended due to lack of funds. The workers received good wages. Many people dreamed of working here.

Building design

The project was made by the best specialists from Korea, USA and Southern Europe. The pride of the creators is elevators that operate at a speed of 40 km/h. With one change until high point the towers can be reached in two minutes. The service elevator goes to the very top.

Autonomous provision of a skyscraper

The outside of the building is partly covered with solar panels. There is also a wind turbine here. The energy they generate is enough for uninterrupted 24-hour power supply. Technical components and television equipment are located in a two-hundred-meter spire, which is made of metal.

IN the tallest building There are cinemas, swimming pools, residential apartments, shopping centers, hotels and much more on the planet. Next to the tower is one of the largest musical fountains in the world.

The opening ceremony

It took place on January 4, 2010. 6 thousand guests were invited to the celebration. The ceremony was postponed several times due to the difficult financial situation. There were a lot of high-ranking guests from 10 countries.

Ticket price for the tallest tower on the planet

The entrance to the observation deck is on floor G. You need to go through a huge shopping mall"Dubai Mall". If you don't know where to go, you can simply walk up to any passerby and name the object. You can also follow the signs. As soon as you enter you will see a large hall. Here is a model of the tower.

It is better to purchase a ticket to the observation deck in advance on the official website. You will be sent a voucher, which you will need to exchange at a special counter for a ticket.

Ticket prices:

  • adult (from 13 years old) costs approximately $35;
  • children's ticket (from 4 to 13 years old) - $25;
  • urgent - $110.

Visitors are allowed into the tower every half hour. There is security at the entrance. Purchases will have to be left in the storage room. You can take your camera and tablet with you, but you will be asked to hand over your laptop. Also, roller skating, weapons and glass bottles are not allowed here. It is prohibited to film the security inspection process. On the way to the observation deck, I will show you all stages of construction from the monitor. The skyscraper will grow right before your eyes. 12 people are allowed into the elevator hall. Visitors do not get sick in the elevators of the Burj Khalifa tower: the height, according to guests, does not affect their well-being in any way.

The view from the observation deck is extraordinary, since the windows here are completely panoramic. The majestic buildings of Dubai, which seem huge on the ground, look miniature from here. Now you need to soak in the moment and enjoy the beauty that opens from the Burj Khalifa. The height at which the observation deck is located is 452 meters. From here you can see the famous symbol of the UAE - the Burj Al Arab hotel. Behind it is the man-made island of Palm Jumeirah. At the observation deck you can buy souvenirs to remember this amazing place. Inside the skyscraper there are 9 hotels, a whole system of fountains, 304 hotels, 2957 parking spaces, 904 apartments.

Height that requires care

The height of the Burj Khalifa seems impossible, but despite this, the building should look perfect. There are 26,000 glass panels designed to sparkle. In order to monitor the cleanliness of the building, special rails are attached to its outer side, along which 12 cars move. The weight of one is 13 tons. 36 people were hired to manage the equipment.

For general development, of course, it will be useful to find out what the height of the attraction in question is. "Burj Khalifa" (in meters the figure is impressive - 828) is simply amazing! But it’s better to try and find an opportunity to get to Dubai to enjoy the view from the world’s tallest skyscraper.
