Mount Huashan China - Path of Death - why was it called that? The most dangerous hiking trails and roads in the world Death Mountain in China

Good day, dear extreme lovers! Our post today will be dedicated to a place called Mount Huashan in China. What's interesting there? And it’s simple, there is the famous death trail. This exciting place will be discussed today. Let's go.

Mount Huashan Path of Death

Another extreme attraction peace is trail on Mount Huashan in China. Mount Huashan is one of several sacred mountains in China that are revered by Buddhists and Taoists around the world. There are only five sacred mountains, and they form a figure similar to a cross, the sides of which are oriented to the cardinal points.

  • In the east is Mount Taishan (Shandong Province, 1545 meters above sea level).
  • In the west is Mount Huashan, which will be discussed in this story (Shaanxi Province, 1997).
  • In the south is Mount Hengshan (Hunan, 1290 m).
  • In the north - Hengshan (Shanxi province, 2017 meters).
  • In the center is Mount Songshan (Hunan Province, 1494 meters).

I recently saw a video from this place on the Internet, and decided to find out in more detail what kind of terrible route this was.

Mount Huashan death trail video:

Climbing Mount Huashan is considered very interesting,

due to the fact that the surroundings in which this happens are very picturesque, and the climb itself is very extreme, since it passes almost over an abyss.

The altitude at which you are moving along the route is almost 2000 meters above sea level. Tourists climb to the top, walking along a thin boardwalk held together with rusty nails, while holding on to a chain that is embedded directly into the rock. There is also insurance, which, apparently, does not give much confidence, since there is a huge abyss below, and insurance resembles a straw that a drowning person grabs. And so, slowly, “sticking” to the rock, you need to go from the beginning to the end of the route, and then come back. There is no exit at the end of the route, you have to go back 😉

Another video about the death trail on Mount Huashan:

I look at the video of the mountain trail in Huashan (huashan cliffside path) and the adrenaline grabs me right to the liver, despite the fact that I am at the computer. I can imagine how people feel when they find themselves there. Judging by reports on the Internet, there are people who, after taking one step, cannot move a centimeter further, their arms and legs turn to stone from horror and they are carefully removed from the walking route.

By the way, while I was studying materials on this route, a natural question arose: “Has anyone jumped from there with a parachute or?”. If you know anything on this issue, please let me know in the comments.

Cost of the Huashan Walking Route attraction: 30 yuan (about 160 rubles).
Interesting: 9.0 out of 10 (breathtaking, and I think this is a serious test of strength for those who are afraid of heights).

And again, unique China. In Shaanxi province, 120 kilometers from the city of Xi'an, one of the sacred places China - Huashan mountain range, Huashan - translated as flower mountain. The mountain became a flower mountain because it has five peaks arranged in such a way that their shape is similar to lotus petals. Climbing to the top is very dangerous, there is practically no road, and in some places the steps are carved out of the granite rock.

Peaks mountain range are called according to the four cardinal directions, and the fifth is Central. The ascents to the West and North Peaks, although winding and steep, are not associated with any particular risk; they only require good physical shape. But the transition from the North Peak to the South Peak scares tourists out of their wits. And it bears the appropriate name - “path of death”.

At a great height along the steep cliffs above the abyss there is a very narrow boardwalk, about 35-40 centimeters wide, nailed down. There are no railings or safety barriers; you can only hold on to the chains driven into the wall or move by pressing tightly and hugging the rock.

Before the “path of death” became known to tourists from other countries, there were no chains at all; local residents simply climbed on boards. Those who overcome their horror and are able to take at least a step above the abyss also wear a safety belt, which is attached with a carbine to a rope stretched along the path. There is also a very dangerous section on the route - a steep climb along a narrow edge of the rock - “Rib of the Green Dragon”.

A flurry of emotions overwhelms the daredevils who decide to complete the route, from panic fear, even loss of consciousness, to extraordinary euphoria from the sight of a fantastic panorama and victory over oneself.

There is less and less on Earth fewer places where no man has gone before. In particular, they (these very legs) reached the steep slopes of Mount Huashan. And since it was not possible to get around the mountain, they had to build a real path of death on its slope.

Where is Mount Huashan located?

The mountain itself is located approximately in the center of China, 120 kilometers east of the city Xi'an, in Shaanxi Province. Just 20 kilometers to the northeast you can see the bend of the famous Yellow River.

Geographic coordinates 34.477797, 110.084682

Mount Huashan

It is worth briefly talking directly about Mount Huashan. This is the western mountain of the Five Great Mountains of China. In fact, the mountain has several peaks. It was originally classified as a mountain with three peaks, but it is now generally accepted that it has five peaks. The highest is the South Peak with a height of 2,154.5 meters (according to other sources, the height is 2,160 meters).

At the top of the mountain is a teahouse, which is actually one of the many Taoist temples located on the five peaks that make up Mount Huashan. Considering that the first inhabitants of this region were monks and led an ascetic lifestyle, their daily meditation was accompanied by a cup of tea.

Thus, gradually the temple became a teahouse, which is visited by thousands of tourists every year. But getting to this secluded place is not so easy. The tea peak of the mountain is located on its southern side, at an altitude of 2155 meters. After walking along the path of death, you can get to the top.

Path of Death

Many people go every year to conquer one of the most dangerous walking routes in the world. It is not for nothing that it is called the path of death. It consists of rickety ladders and planks nailed to rocks. Every step of this road is accompanied by a powerful surge of adrenaline in any person.

The road to the top begins with a large staircase called the “Heavenly Staircase”. At first glance, it leads to the sky. This is a kind of ascent into the clouds, since it is unrealistic to see where the steps end, and there are thousands of them.

Heavenly staircase

On the way to the top you can see houses and even small villages. However, the road does not end here. This is just the beginning and the most accessible part of the journey. Once you reach the south side of the mountain, one of the most dangerous routes in the world awaits you.

This part of the path is made of thin planks that are fixed to the mountainside. To maintain your balance, you must hold on to the chains also attached to the slopes. Sometimes you can use small holes in the rock. There are practically no safety features here.

We think that when (and if) you get to the end of the journey, the mountaintop tea combined with the adrenaline will be incredibly delicious.

Someone overcomes a crazy path just to prove something to themselves or to tickle the nerves (of themselves and their loved ones). But in the world there is a real road of death, Yungas. People use it only because there is simply no other way.

The myth of the death trail

Many sources claim that the death trail is the only way to the top of Mount Huashan. But that's not true. In fact, there are easier ways to get to the top. 2 cable cars lead respectively to the two peaks of the mountain. And the path of death is just another attraction in the vastness of the Celestial Empire. But the attraction is really dangerous. There is a fee to visit the death trail.

Crowds of tourists storm the death trail

Recently, various safety systems have been introduced, for example, safety ropes.
Be that as it may, the path of death definitely deserves attention, at least for the views that open from it.

Don't forget to visit the legendary Terracotta Army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. It is located about 70 kilometers west of the death trail, near the city of Xi'an

Well, a little more extreme and adrenaline for today. Some people are fierce opponents of all this, and a decent portion are intoxicated by the thrill!

If you cannot live without thrills and simply dream of a new dose of adrenaline, then the extreme “attraction” on the Chinese Huashan Mountain is for you. Both daredevils come here who want to prove to themselves and the world their own fearlessness, as well as weak-spirited people who dream of getting rid of their inner insecurities. Huashan Mountain is an effective pill for fears and an effective vitamin of self-affirmation.

Flower Mountain, which is how the word Huashan is translated into Russian, is a sacred Chinese mountain that unites five petal-shaped peaks and is located near the city of Xi'an in Shaanxi Province. There are many fascinating tourist routes here - among them there are climbs to cable car, and hiking. Curious travelers can, if desired, reach each of the five peaks of Huashan - South, North, West, East and Central.

3

The most convenient way is to use the funicular and climb from the foot North Mountain to its top. The road to the Western Peak is also safe. The hike to the North Peak, starting from the eastern entrance, with all the tortuosity and steepness of the ascent, although it requires a fair amount of physical training, is also not associated with much risk, since it is laid along fairly wide stone steps.

4

But there is also one tourist route, which can make the most impressionable tourists faint, is the transition from the North Peak of Huashan to the South Peak. Some travelers, having taken the first step, literally turn to stone with horror, unable to unclasp their cramped fingers and move from their place. And this is not surprising.

This road, laid along sheer vertical cliffs, is not for nothing called the path of death () - falling off the narrow boards into a bottomless abyss would mean certain death, but the flow of tourists trying to make the risky climb is not thinning. Travelers step on boards nailed over the abyss and move to the top in an embrace with a rock or holding on to chains firmly soldered to the stone wall.

6

No railings or fences - just you, a crazy wind, and hundreds of meters under your feet. Of course, there is some kind of insurance - all daredevils are wearing a belt with a cable and a carabiner on it so that they can cling to the safety rope stretched along the entire route.

7

The reward for brave tourists will be not only the marvelous panorama opening from the South Peak - the highest of all five “petals” of the Huashan flower, but also a whole bouquet of stormy emotions experienced by travelers who have overcome the ascent. The news that climbing the most dangerous path is not a one-way route, but a round trip, sounds like a thunderbolt to many tourists. clear skies, but the descent, as a rule, is easier.

8

Couples in love who believe in lucky omens leave symbols of unquenchable feelings on the top of the conquered mountain - shiny locks and red ribbons, the abundance of which dazzles the eyes. Each of those who have conquered the dangerous path happily shares the extraordinary sensations of the climb - at first it is panic fear, and then the delightful euphoria of not giving up, succeeding, overcoming, winning.

120 km east of Xi'an, the granite peaks of the Huashan massif rise above the northern plains. This is one of the five sacred mountains of China, in their system it was called Xiyue, Western Peak. She was especially revered by the Taoists.

Huashan has five peaks in total: the highest is South (2154 m), then East (2096.2 m), West (2082.6 m), Central (2037.8 m) and North (1614.9 m). The shape of these peaks resembles a lotus flower. Perhaps this is how the mountains got their name.

The climb to Huashan, which is about 14 km, is very dangerous. In some places there is no road, the steps are simply hollowed out sheer cliff. In ancient times, Huashan was called “The steepest mountain in the Celestial Empire.”

10

The most famous section of the trail is the Green Dragon's Rib, with chasms on either side of the steps.

From Huashan village to the top of the mountain it takes six to nine hours, but you can stay overnight both in the village itself and in fairly modest hotels along the route up.

By the way, massive chains were screwed to the walls of the mountain relatively recently - for Western tourists. Previously, people climbed Huashan simply - on planks. It’s good that at least in some sections of this amazing route the chains are not adjacent to the rock itself, but are suspended in the form of a railing on the outside of the path.

Greetings, dear friends!

Today we will go to one of the 5 great mountains of the Celestial Empire and one of the most dangerous mountains world for tourists - Mount Huashan in Shaanxi province (not to be confused with the mountain in Anhui province).

The mountain has a bad reputation. According to unofficial statistics, Huashan takes up to 100 human lives every year. It is here that the world-famous “Path of Death” is located, attracting extreme sports enthusiasts from all corners of the globe.

To be fair, we note that Mount Huashan is not a tea mountain. The climate here is cooler and not humid enough to grow tea. Our goal is the "Path of Death".

It is for the sake of the “Path of Death” that we travel 120 km from ancient capital China - Xi'an, taking about 2 hours by train.

10 minutes by local bus, and here we are at the foot of Mount Huashan. Entrance to the mountain will cost you 180 yuan ($30), and if you are a student it is 2 times cheaper. Let's go!

At first the climb is quite comfortable and the going is easy.

But gradually the steepness of the steps increases.

In some places we are forced to stand on all fours.

The hike to the highest southern peak takes about 6 hours. Incredibly stunning views!

On the southern peak we find our “Path of Death”. Wow, it's scary here at first! But then the fear disappears, not for everyone, but for some it decreases...

The Death Path consists of several boards roughly nailed to each other at an altitude of 2 km.

But when the board runs out, we have no choice but to walk along the grooves in the rock, which Taoist monks made for their own needs many centuries ago.

You still don’t realize that the movement along the path goes in two directions, and you have to manage to get around the Chinese coming towards you.

The goal was achieved, the trail was completed, and we received an unrealistic charge of positivity and adrenaline!

And also Huashan sacred mountain, it is full of Taoist temples and pagodas, and there is a huge park at the foot of the mountain.

If you're in Xi'an, be sure to visit Huashan!
