Sirmione Castle is a majestic rock facing the lake, to which it is connected by a drawbridge. 146 steps lead to the bypass routes, from where you can admire the surrounding area. Entering the castle is also the only way to get into the center of Sirmione, touch its history and observe the defensive system of the lake.

Built during the time of Mastino I Della Scala, Sirmione Castle is surrounded by many legends. Among them there is one about Ebengardo and his beloved Aricha. According to legend, one night a traveler arrived at the castle and asked for an overnight stay. He was struck by Ariche's beauty and forced his way into her chambers. When Ariche rejected him, he stabbed her with a dagger. In turn, Ebengardo killed the scoundrel, and now on stormy nights his ghost wanders around the castle in search of his beloved.

Caves of Catullus in Sirmione (Le Grotte di Catullo)

"Caves" are well-preserved ruins of a Roman villa dating back to the 1st century AD. They are regarded today as one of the finest examples of a Roman villa in northern Italy. A thousand years ago, this complex had no equal and stretched over an area of ​​about 2 hectares: the original building had 3 floors and long terraces, which offered a wonderful view of the lake.

Hidden in the dungeons of the villa was a pool with thermal waters, known back in the days of the Empire. Today the villa and its museum and olive grove are open to the public. Thanks to restoration work, today 1,500 olive trees produce oil of the highest quality, and the museum contains archaeological finds from this and several other Roman villas on the lake Garda, not to mention various documents preserving the detailed history of the lake from ancient times to the Middle Ages.

Garda Island

Island Garda, or Bourgeois Island- the largest on the lake and located 200 m from the shore on the territory of San Felice Del Benaco. Today it can be reached by boat owned by the Cavazzas, who have been organizing excursions to the enchanting park and villa Ferrari, an admirable example of a villa built in the early 20th century. and the only example of Venetian neo-Gothic style on the lake.

Over the centuries, through successive rulers, the island has been home to such famous figures as Dante Alighieri, Sant'Antonio of Padua and Adelaide Malanotte, the main translator of Rossini's works.

Riva del Garda

Riva del Garda in Trentino is located north of the lake and deserves special attention. At this point the lake narrows and wedges itself between the steep cliffs of Mount Rocchetta: here the water is colder and clearer, in which the Dolomites are reflected, and the silence is more rarefied, because movement on motor boats is prohibited.

Riva del Garda, as the name implies, is connected to the lake and carries its waters far into the mountains. This area is well protected so that tourists can look at numerous evidence of Roman and Medieval times.

Among the most exciting places - D'Annunzio's personal museum, where Vate’s everyday things are stored: clothes, shoes, his dog’s collars. One of the museum's attractions is the ship donated by D'Annunzio in 1923 and now located in the park, with its bow towards the Adriatic Sea. Vittoriale is not only a historical place, but also a wonderful point from which you can enjoy an ideal view of the local landscape.

Limone

Limone is one of the oldest and best preserved places on the shores of the lake. Garda. The origin of the name is not exactly known: perhaps it comes from the Latin “limes”, but, most likely, it still comes from lemons. Limone is famous precisely for the citrus fruits grown here, which, due to the warm wind from the lake and the unique microclimate, always produce an excellent harvest. The protected terraces are home to picturesque citrus groves, the most famous being the Castel Limonarium, which dates back to 1700 and is today open to the public.

In addition to the mentioned lemons, you will find citrons, tangerines, oranges, and kumquats here. In the historical center of Limone you can stroll along narrow alleys, look at old squares and fishermen's houses.

These houses have now been reconstructed and are open to visitors during the holidays. Don't miss it either Church of St. Pietro in Oliveto. It was built in the 9th century and is one of the oldest Romanesque churches in the region. Thanks to the restoration in 1989, the original frescoes can be seen today.

Cathedral of Salò (Duomo di Salò) on Lake Garda

Its facade, simple, with a touch of incompleteness, is made of ordinary brick, and only in 1509 a marble portal in the Renaissance style was added to it. Giant cauldrons on Lake Garda

Which destroyed the rock and created the pools that we still see today.

Interesting fact: ceramics and arrowheads found near the Giant's Cauldrons in Torbole indicate that the valley was inhabited in prehistoric times.

The lake is remote from the main tourist routes, the banks are steep, and the roads are narrow. All this makes it a little less accessible than other lakes, which is what attracts high society here. The main local entertainment is boat trips and visiting public parks and villas. This is for us tourists, and the powers that be, apparently, simply find peace and solitude here.

Lake Lugano and is not remarkable at all, except for the very Swiss Lugano- a solid, calm, but not very outstanding city. There is also a miniature park “Switzerland in Miniature” (Swissminiatur), but it clearly does not live up to the Klagenfurt “Minimundus” (Minimundus), not until “Mini Italy” (Italy in miniature) in Rimini.

And finally, the lake. Three coastal towns can be considered the main tourist centers: Sirmione, Riva del Garda, Malcesine in conjunction with Limone sul Garda. You can stay in them, but if you want more peace and quiet, then any place from Malcesine before Torri del Benaco. This coast, in my opinion, is the best for living in terms of beauty, location relative to all attractions, and price-quality ratio. The water in the lake is clean and warms up to 24 degrees in summer, so swimming is quite possible, only the beaches are rocky, there are no sandy ones.So, what can you visit, how to have fun on Lake Garda, where to go and what to see.

1. Limone sul Garda

Strictly speaking, from any point on the lake you can swim to Limone Sul Garda to the country of “limonia”, where, indeed, lemons grow and limoncello, a sickly sweet lemon liqueur, is sold at every turn.

2. Mount Monte Baldo

The climb up the mountain is memorable for its gorgeous panoramas and llamas grazing in the high-mountain meadows. It costs 20 euros, you need to come early, there may be a long line by mid-day. For extreme sports enthusiasts, there is another form of entertainment - going down on a mountain bike; you can rent a bike right there at the lower station of the funicular. And don't forget that it can be cold and windy at the top.

3. Sirmione

The main city of the lake is definitely Sirmione(Sirmione). Its very geographical location is very unusual. A long peninsula, several kilometers wide at the base and several hundred meters wide at the end, is separated from Sirmione by a channel and the powerful walls of the Scaliger fortress. In fact, it is an island, and a very beautiful one at that.

My favorite route starts with climbing the fortress and then walking along the right bank to the public beach. The path runs along the shore and in one place there are pipes for discharging excess thermal water directly into the lake, as evidenced by the obvious smell of hydrogen sulfide. Take a photo on the pier and then climb up through the olive grove with comfortable benches for relaxation. On the road turn right towards the villa Catullo. There is little left of the villa of the ancient Roman poet, and the need to visit the ruins for a fee always makes me doubtful, but from the entrance there will be a beautiful panorama, so the walk makes sense. On your way back, turn right in the direction of the ancient church Chiesa di San Pietro in Mavino.

Then, continuing forward, you will go to the Baths of Catullo and then to the shopping and entertainment part of the city. The Baths of Catullo are small and purely therapeutic and relaxing. Hot hydrogen sulfide water is supplied to small outdoor pools, in which you just need to soak. They have no other entertainment. The town itself is untouched by modern urban planning and is distinguished by its cleanliness, abundance of flowers, shops, restaurants and other tourist delights. And, of course, crowds of vacationers during the high season.

A very green place, a good place to spend time with children, take a walk, and look at the animals. That is, you will slowly drive through an area where animals roam freely, and only then, after parking your car, you can visit a classic zoo.

From almost any city you can get to Verona by regular bus. The city is famous and undoubtedly interesting. The history, dating back to the times of the Celts and Romans, is forever imprinted on the marble pavements. The city of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, rulers from the Scaliger dynasty and the great Dante, has only one significant drawback - it is too touristy. The flow of people wanting to rub Juliet’s bronze breasts never stops for almost a minute, neither in winter nor in summer, nor on weekdays, nor on weekends. In addition to historical monuments, tourists are attracted by the boutique street Via Giuseppe Mazzini, where the best brands of almost all fashion houses in the world are presented. Come to Verona, but be prepared for human noise, hustle and bustle. There are many restaurants in the center, but almost all of them are aimed at tourists. 1. Where to stay. We chose the town of Desenzano del Garda to stay because there is a train station there. There is also a station in the neighboring town of Peschiera del Garda, but based on reviews and photographs, I liked Desenzano more. Although it is more convenient to get from Peschiera to the Gardaland and Movieland amusement parks, there are free shuttle buses from the railway station.

2. How to get there. We flew to Verona, took tickets for a direct flight with S7 airlines. If you take a non-refundable fare with cabin-sized luggage, you can save a lot. We took tickets at a refundable rate and normal luggage of 23 kg, plus hand luggage of 10 kg, but we chose departure on weekdays, it was cheaper. There is a shuttle bus from Verona Airport to the train and bus station. The ticket costs 6 euros, you can buy it in advance on the bus company’s website, luggage is included in the price, and there is a special compartment on the bus. There is an ATV ticket office in the airport and train station buildings. At the station we took tickets for the regional train to Desenzano, the cost of a one-way ticket was 4.40 euros. Tickets can be purchased from a machine or ticket office, payment by card or cash. There were machines that only accepted cards for payment. The train schedule can be viewed on the website. There are delays. The platforms in Verona and Desenzano are equipped with elevators and special paths for transporting wheeled suitcases. The landlady met us in Desenzano by car, but from the station you can get to the desired location by taxi or by local bus, if necessary.

3. Visa. We applied only for my mother through the Italy Visa Application Center; for residents of Moscow and the immediate Moscow region this is not difficult. We made an appointment on the website, filled out a form there, and collected documents from the list. The visa was ready in three days.

4. Accommodation. We booked an apartment on the airbnb website, used this source for the first time, and we liked it. We were pleased with the housing - the location, the furnishings, and the comfort. From our accommodation it was convenient to get to the station, shops, the city center and the lake; the beaches were further away. If you choose housing near the beach, then it will be a long way to get to train stations - bus and railway, and large shops, it’s not close on foot, you need a car or a local bus.

5. Nutrition. Since we had our own kitchen, we cooked ourselves and bought food in the Italmarkt and U2 supermarkets - the latter is located in the La Vele shopping center. These stores were not far from our apartment, and there are several other large and small stores in the city. On Thursday there was a small food market in Piazza Garibaldi not far from our apartments, and on Tuesdays there is a large market in the Old Town, during which time public transport is closed on the embankment. There is also a large shopping center called La Leone, which is served by a free shuttle bus throughout the day. The city has a lot of different restaurants, cafes, snack bars, pizzerias for every taste and budget. We went to the Vivaldi ice cream parlor in the Old Town and the Al Fattore pizzeria restaurant.

6. Attractions and entertainment. The city has several interesting ancient sites - a castle, a cathedral, ancient palaces, an old port, a Roman villa, and an archaeological museum. Various entertainment and sporting events are held, especially in summer. For example, since June, every Wednesday the city hosts the White Night festival. All information about the events of the city, maps, bus schedules, booklets can be obtained at the tourist center, which is located in the historical building of the Todeschini Palace, next to the old harbor. There are discount cards Garda Promotions Card and Verona Welcome Card, I read about them in other reviews, there are discount coupons, for example, for boat tickets. But unfortunately, I was unable to get them; the information center advised me to contact the hotels, but since we lived in private apartments, these coupons were not available to us.

7. Beaches. There are three of them in the city - Desenzano Beach, Spiaggia d'Oro and Porta Rivoltella Beach. We went to the first one and liked it the most. On the beach there is a cafe, pizzeria, free shower and toilet, wifi. You can rent a sunbed and an umbrella, or sit down with your towel in the free area, there is enough space for everyone, I’m talking about the month of June.

8. Public transport. We took the train to Peschiera del Garda to change buses to Malcesine, Verona and Milan. You can go directly to Brescia, and with transfers to Turin, Bergamo, Venice, Mantua. The bus station is next to the train station, but some routes have a stop at the port in the old town. But on Tuesdays it does not work, since public transport in that area is blocked during the market. We also traveled by bus to Sirmione, SalO, Gardone Riviera. Bus tickets in Desenzano were bought at tobacco kiosks; in Peschiera they used a special machine; you can also buy tickets from the driver. From Desenzano to the north of the lake there is a direct bus to Riva along the western coast of Garda. To drive along the eastern shore of the lake, you need to get to Peschierre and change trains. You can view bus schedules, where the websites of four bus companies are collected. It is important to pay attention to the abbreviations indicated in the schedule columns to understand when the bus runs.

Ships- another way to see how to get around the different towns of the lake, pleasant in good weather, but more expensive and slower (even if it is a high-speed boat) compared to the bus (although some buses stop at each pillar “on demand”). Schedules, routes, ticket prices can be viewed. We took a boat ride only once - when we were returning from Sirmione to Desenzano, instead of taking a bus, to get an idea of ​​these boats. 10. What we visited in other towns on Garda:

Sirmione - Terme Sirmione - took the AQUARIA SHORT WEEKDAYS ticket, costs 15 euros, session 1.5 hours.
