What does it mean that Ural Airlines can pay for baggage? Rules for the carriage of baggage and hand luggage at Ural Airlines

Global statistics clearly say - . But this was achieved on a global scale only thanks to strict standards and transportation rules. One of these norms is permissible weight of baggage on an airplane for one passenger.

Despite the fact that many consider this norm to be a whim of the airlines, it is based on serious calculations. Any aircraft certified for flights has such characteristics as maximum take-off weight and permissible payload weight. Exceeding the weight of the aircraft according to these indicators directly affects.

In addition, it is not difficult to guess that each “extra” place requires additional efforts to process baggage, register it, control it, and deliver it. Therefore, budget airlines, which make money by cutting costs as much as possible, are trying to limit passengers in this matter even in 2018.

Global standards and rules

What is the allowable weight of luggage on an airplane in 2019? To begin with, let us explain that all baggage accompanying passengers during the flight can be divided into 3 categories:

  • Personal items
  • Hand luggage
  • Baggage

Free of charge, according to the law of the Russian Federation and international rules, the airline is obliged to transport 1 piece of baggage weighing no more than 10 kg and personal belongings (reading book, umbrella, laptop, etc.). Companies transport everything else at their own discretion, guided by their own rules.

At the same time, as in any other issues related to air transportation, you can be guided by a simple truth - the more expensive the ticket, the greater the permissible weight of luggage on the plane, which a passenger can carry for free.

Most modern airlines, including the leaders of the domestic air transportation market, evaluate all their passenger’s baggage according to three criteria:

  • number of seats;
  • weight of one place;
  • dimensions of one place.

When purchasing a ticket, you need to pay attention to the tariff plan - it is according to which each airline determines how many seats and how much weight a passenger can carry. In addition, loyalty program participants are given additional privileges.

Important! When calculating the weight of luggage on the plane before the flight, keep in mind that for a child under 2 years old, even without their own seat, you can take 1 piece of luggage weighing up to 10 kg for free.

What luggage can you take on board an airplane in 2018?

Bags and suitcases that a traveler takes with him inside an airplane are called hand luggage.

You can bring 1 piece of hand luggage weighing no more than 10 kilograms on board the aircraft free of charge. This norm is guaranteed by law.
But there is a small nuance here - most airlines have restrictions on the size of hand luggage. The most commonly used are: dimensions no more than 55x40x20 cm or no more than 115 cm in the sum of 3 dimensions.

In turn, airlines reward travelers who buy expensive tickets to high-flight airlines by increasing their rates.
For example, in 2018, airline business class passengers can take 2 pieces of hand luggage into the cabin with a total weight of no more than 15 kg.
When discussing the allowable weight of luggage on an airplane, we must not forget about personal items that are not considered carry-on luggage by law.

In excess of the established free baggage allowance and without additional payment, the passenger has the right to transport individual items, the list of which is precisely defined in paragraph 135 of the Federal Aviation Regulations. Read more about this.

What kind of luggage can be transported as cargo?

Larger bags are accepted into the cargo compartment of the aircraft than into the cabin. However, here too there are a number of restrictions for passengers that apply in 2018.

There is no legal requirement for free checked baggage for passengers. This has made it possible for many airlines to introduce so-called “baggage-free” fares, significantly reducing the cost of flights for business people and light travelers. These, for example, include “Light” tariffs from Utair or “Economy-Promo” tariffs from Ural Airlines.

For standard Economy class fares, which most carriers have, the free allowance is 1 piece weighing no more than 23 kg. But there are exceptions here too - so before flying you should always look at the information on the website of a specific company.

Important! Russian airlines do not take on board luggage weighing more than 50 kg. In most European countries, the maximum permissible weight is no more than 32 kg. There, even a porter at the airport will refuse to bear such a “heaviness,” citing the instructions of the trade union.

The largest Russian airlines and their free baggage allowances.

The passenger's personal property carried on board falls into the baggage category. Airlines' policies in this regard vary. Therefore, it is appropriate for a passenger who intends to fly with a particular airline to familiarize themselves with the carrier's requirements. Let's consider the conditions for transporting luggage of the Russian holding company " Ural AL» and find out what additional payment is provided here for baggage in excess of the established norm.

Let's find out the general rules for carrying baggage. The baggage allowance is regulated by a separate section of the airline's requirements, which provides for the division of the client's belongings into hand luggage and luggage itself. The size standards for hand luggage depend on the class of flight, and determining the limit of things that will go in the luggage compartment regulates the fare plan of the airline ticket.

Let's talk about working tariffs for passengers. Today, the company's clients book seats on board using six options presented. The most affordable way to travel with this airline is the “Promo” tariff. However, airlines do not provide space in the luggage compartment for flights within the country, CIS countries and international flights. In such situations, customers only have access to paid luggage.

Tariff plans "Economy" and "Premium Economy" allow the client to use a single space in the luggage compartment. However, the luggage weight here is up to 23 kg. Exceeding this criterion requires additional funding.

When purchasing “Business Light” or “Comfort Light” air tickets, the client has the right to increase the weight of luggage to 32 kg. At the same time, the airline offers the passenger one seat in the luggage compartment. But expensive “Business” tickets require an increase to two pieces of luggage with a maximum weight of 32 kilograms. The described conditions briefly characterize the company’s policy “ Ural Airlines" Baggage whose weight does not fit within the specified limits is subject to additional payment by the passenger.

Exceptions

These standards do not apply to all flights. When traveling to Dubai from Moscow, passengers have the right to take a suitcase weighing up to 15 kg. The Moscow-Belgrade-Moscow flight assumes an increase in the norm to 32 kilograms. In addition, special rates apply for flights from the capital to Baikonur in both directions.

Here, clients with standard conditions of service take on board only up to 5 kg of hand luggage and check in a maximum of 15 kg of things as checked luggage. On the same flight, business class passengers bring up to 10 kg of personal belongings into the cabin, and here they can check in a suitcase weighing 30 kg in the luggage compartment. Similar rates apply to children 2–12 years old, depending on the class of service. But the carriage of luggage for an infant is not provided on all of the described routes.

Things in the cabin

Now let’s take a quick look at how hand luggage is transported on an airplane “ Ural Airlines" The dimensions and weight of things on board the aircraft are determined by the cabin service class. Three budget tariff plans of economy class provide free transportation of a travel bag with dimensions of 55x40x20 and a weight of 10 kilograms. These standards apply to adult passengers and children under 12 years of age.

For passengers who prefer a high-class flight, the airline offers two free seats for hand luggage. The maximum dimensions of the sides of bags remain within the economy class norm, but the weight of transported property increases to 15 kilograms.

Parents flying with infants under two years of age have the right to carry an additional 10 kilograms of luggage per child free of charge. Moreover, it does not matter for the airline whether customers check things in as luggage or take them into the cabin. Passengers will be able to transport a baby stroller free of charge.

In addition to checked luggage, travelers have the right to additionally bring on board a personal bag for daily use, baby food, small household appliances: laptop, phone, video or photo camera, clothes in briefcases. However, due to recent events, airlines are asking customers to refrain from using and charging the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphone on board, since the device is susceptible to spontaneous combustion.

Payment for excess baggage

Now let’s figure out how much baggage costs on a plane.” Ural Airlines" When purchasing a Promo class air ticket, a passenger will certainly be interested in this question. When flying within Russia, the cost of transporting a suitcase with a standard economy class weight of 23 kilograms will cost 2,000 rubles. Traveling to the CIS countries requires paying 25 euros for one place in the luggage compartment. Passengers on international flights will have to pay for such services at a rate of 50 euros.

Oversized luggage is paid by clients on a per-place basis or per excess weight basis. The cost of the second place in the luggage compartment, provided that the weight of things does not exceed 23 kg, was assessed by the airline as similar to the standards of the Promo package. The only exception here is this package itself. The company has set a tax of 150 euros for foreign air travel. Please note that this rule only applies to economy class passengers. The tariff for a occupied third place on international routes is also 150 € for all service packages.

Business class clients pay for additional seats at the rate of 2,000 rubles within Russia, 50 euros when traveling within the CIS and 150 € on international flights. However, the norm of transported luggage here has been increased to 32 kg, and the dimensions of the cargo fit into a total value of 2,030 mm.

Excess weight of luggage in the range of 23 -32 kilograms will require an additional payment of 2,000 rubles in Russia, 25 euros in the CIS countries and 100 € if the client is planning a flight abroad. Of course, such requirements apply only to economy class passengers. Exceeding the weight of baggage from 32 to 50 kilograms requires advance notification to the airlines. If the issue is resolved positively, the passenger will pay the airlines 10,000 rubles if he intends to fly within the country. Similar conditions on flights within the CIS will require an additional payment of one hundred euros. International flights will increase the fee to 150 €.

Bonuses for regular customers

Cost of baggage transportation on an airplane " Ural Airlines"changes for people who took part in the Wings airline bonus program. Here, clients who own a silver card and fly in economy class, exceeding the permissible luggage weight of up to 32 kg, do not pay the excess. For luggage weighing up to 50 kilograms, payment is expected in the amount of half the nominal value of the second piece. A similar discount is given for additional space in the luggage compartment. In addition, they offer free transportation of sports equipment.

Participants of the Wings program count on discounts when paying for additional pieces of baggage

Gold level cardholders receive a 50% discount if the weight of the luggage being transported is between 32–50 kg. A seat in economy class and excess weight of up to 32 kg allows free transportation of “extra” things or sports equipment. The surcharge for additional seats also has its nuances. Such passengers have the right to count on free transportation of property up to 23 kilograms when traveling on a budget flight. Moreover, the airline provides additional seats here at half price. And business class customers receive a 50% discount on excess seats.

Airline special requirements

Transportation of oversized items becomes a separate topic of conversation. Typically, sports equipment, specialized equipment, and entertainment equipment fall into this category. In cases where such objects fit into dimensions of up to 2 meters and 3 centimeters and do not weigh more than 32 kg, the client has the right to use standard transportation conditions.

Exceeding the established standard will require the passenger to inform the company representative in advance about such cargo and pay an additional fee for transporting the item. You can pay for airline services in any available way. It provides the possibility of cashless payments, online payments and transfer of funds through self-service terminals.

In addition, the company has the right to refuse to transport an object to the client if it falls into the category of substances hazardous to the environment. Airlines suggest that customers review the list of items that are not recommended to be taken on board. Here are water equipment for sports and entertainment, with the exception of windsurfers' boards, vehicles and their structural parts, plants weighing more than five kilograms, household appliances weighing more than 10 kg.

Transportation of non-standard cargo requires an individual agreement with the carrier and additional payment for overload

Keep in mind that the company will refuse to transport these items even for additional payment. Therefore, take into account such nuances. Prohibited substances include toxic, isotopic, explosive compounds, firearms and bladed weapons, and living plants. Transportation of such categories of luggage requires special permits and papers confirming the passenger’s legal ownership of a specific object.

As for the transportation of animals, the airline assumes that the client provides the necessary documents for the animal and adheres to the current transportation requirements. Moreover, the passenger will have to pay for the pet’s travel at excess baggage rates and notify the carrier in advance of this situation.

The information provided briefly characterizes the conditions “ Ural AL"and will help beginners get a general idea of the formation of the pricing policy of this company. However, the presented data loses relevance over time, so we invite readers to independently study the standards of this carrier that they can find.

Standards for baggage and carry-on luggage at Ural Airlines depend on the purchased air ticket fare
Today, of the six tariff plans offered by airlines, “Promo” is becoming the most budget-friendly, but does not include free baggage transportation
For flights on certain routes, baggage allowances have changed relative to standard rules.
The dimensions of hand luggage on the Ural AL aircraft are unchanged, but the weight depends on the chosen class of service
Exceeding the established standard for free transportation of items will require additional payment.

When planning a trip, it is important to understand how much hand luggage and baggage a passenger can take on the plane for free. Read more about and what luggage is included.

Participants in the Wings bonus program can carry one additional piece of baggage weighing up to 32 kg or 23 kg of sports equipment free of charge. When paying for additional baggage or excess weight, they are given a 50% discount.

Carry-on baggage requirements

Passengers of Ural Airlines can carry one piece of hand luggage weighing up to 5 kg free of charge in economy class and two pieces of hand luggage with a total weight of up to 15 kg in business class. The dimensions of hand luggage (backpack, bag, briefcase or box) should not be more than 50x40x20 cm, otherwise you will have to pay for excess baggage allowance when checking in at the airport.

Federal Aviation Regulations have approved a list of items for transportation in the cabin of an aircraft. These items are not counted as hand luggage by the airline and are carried free of charge.

Checked baggage requirements

In the luggage compartment of Ural Airlines aircraft, they allow you to carry free of charge either one piece of luggage from 10 to 23 kg, or one or two pieces up to 32 kg:

  • in the "Promo" tariff - 1 piece weighing up to 10 kg.

  • Children aged 2 to 12 years: 1 place up to 5 kg.

Transporting animals on an airplane

Before the flight departs, you must inform the airline that you plan to travel with your pet and obtain confirmation of consent to transportation. You must have a veterinary certificate with you. Passengers can take a cat, canary, parrot or dog with them into the aircraft cabin if the weight of the pet including transportation is no more than 8 kg and the size of the container is up to 45*35*25 cm. The service for transporting an animal in the aircraft cabin is paid: from 2500 rubles . Guide dogs fly in the cabin free of charge.

If the animal weighs more than 8 kg, taking into account the weight of the transportation container, then it must be transported in the luggage compartment. Ural Airlines does not transport animals in the luggage compartments on all types of aircraft. Therefore, you must first agree and obtain permission from the airline to transport the animal, and then make payment.

Damage to luggage

If your luggage is damaged, please contact the search service without leaving the delivery area. If the passenger has left the baggage claim area, it is considered that he has no claims to the baggage. Draw up a special report on the malfunction of the luggage, which will be prepared by an airport employee. Next, contact the airline: file a complaint, attaching your ticket, baggage tag, malfunction report and documents that determine the amount of damage.

Lost luggage

If your baggage did not arrive on the same flight as you, then contact the search service in the delivery area and fill out a statement of lost baggage (report). Next, keep in touch with the search service by phone, which will be indicated in the report.

Avianiti searches for cheap air tickets by comparing their prices with offers from other airlines and ticket agencies. You can select a fare with baggage included when booking your flight tickets.

The note is written on the basis of the Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) and will help to better understand the rules of Russian airlines and the rights of passengers. New FAPs were updated last year and determine the minimum weight of hand luggage and baggage, their dimensions, as well as which items of baggage can be carried free of charge on board Russian airlines.

Each carrier has its own baggage allowance.

The cost of baggage on Ural Airlines is as follows: the size of one piece of baggage should not exceed 203 cm in three dimensions, and its weight should not exceed 50 kilograms.

Anything larger is considered oversized cargo and is paid for as cargo, not as baggage..

UralAirlines has three criteria for baggage allowance: quantity (space), weight and size. Each class of service has its own norm.

“Promo” with “Comfort” is not comfortable

The air carrier informs that from April 18 it has introduced new rules for baggage transportation. The changes also affected the free baggage allowance. It depends on the fare the Ural Airlines passenger flies.

Those flying with the Promo fare no longer have free baggage. For them only paid.

"Economy" and "Premium" allow free transportation of 1 suitcase weighing up to 23 kg.

“Business Light” and “Economy Light” - 1 suitcase up to 32 kg.

“Business” and “Comfort” - 2 suitcases of 32 kg each.

Little passengers have their own rules. From two years old to 12 years old, 10 kg of free baggage is allowed, including 5 kg of hand luggage. After 12 years – 20 kg, including the same 5 kg of luggage.

There are things that are not included in the free baggage allowance and for which you will have to pay as excess baggage. These are vehicles (motorcycles, cars, boats...), musical instruments, flowers and seedlings, birds, pets.

As for household appliances, they can be transported either free of charge or as excess baggage. It depends on the fare the owner flies and the size of the equipment.

Hand luggage

The definition of “carry-on luggage” includes things that a passenger is allowed to take into the aircraft cabin, free of charge.

The weight and size of luggage is limited - no more than 115 cm in three-dimensional dimensions and no heavier than 10 kilograms.

There are exceptions for baggage for those flying business class. For them, the free hand luggage allowance has been increased to two pieces of 15 kilograms each. But the dimensions of the luggage should still be the same - 115 cm.

In addition, along with luggage, the passenger has the right to take personal property from a limited list.

These are things that he cannot do without during the flight (cane, medicines, cradle, baby food, diabetic food), as well as valuable, expensive and fragile items - small electronics, a briefcase, a handbag.

Laptops, video cameras and other electronics do not need to be weighed or labeled. They are not subject to baggage allowance and are not included in the weight of hand luggage.

"Light" in Ural

UralAirlines introduced a new fare last December - baggage-free, also known as "light". The company was in a hurry and did not properly think through the rules of the game according to the “light” rules. As a result, the new tariff turned out to be crude and contradictory.

It took the company’s management two days to understand this and, having canceled the “light” option for a while, they quickly released a new version of their baggage-free fare. This happened in the same December 2015.

After sanding, the nicks still remained. Thus, Ural Airlines passengers who choose “light” can either save money or, conversely, overpay. In addition, this new tariff does not apply to all destinations, and not even to all flights.

Please note that the baggage-free fare cannot be returned or changed. Or rather, you can change it, but you will have to pay penalties. And they are quite big - 3 thousand rubles.

For example, at most baggage rates, ticket exchange and return is punishable by only 1 thousand rubles

If at the last moment you realized that you can’t fly light, then you can pay extra for things, but this spontaneous decision will cost you 2 thousand rubles.

Sometimes it’s cheaper to buy a “luggage” ticket right away. Better yet, turn on forethought in advance before choosing “light”.

The essence of the baggage-free fare is that it allows business people, who fly, as a rule, with one briefcase, not to overpay for a ticket, the price of which includes the cost of UralAirlines baggage.

This fare may also be of interest to budget passengers who are counting money in an era of economic crisis, but are not ready to give up air travel.

What does "light" allow?:

  • 10 kilograms of hand luggage and those personal items that are included in the limited list of things allowed into the cabin along with the passenger. Owners of silver “Wings” are given another 10 kilograms of luggage, and gold ones – 20 kilograms plus;
  • save on your ticket. The benefit can be different - from 500 to 1,500 rubles. It depends on the route;

Pitfalls of “light”:

  • it is not available on all routes;
  • Some flights are also exempt from baggage allowance;
  • such a ticket may be more expensive than a baggage ticket.

For example, a Ural Airlines passenger flying from Yekaterinburg to Novosibirsk on a direct flight is deprived of a baggage-free fare. And this flight will cost him at least 7,650 rubles. But if he chooses a flight with a transfer in Moscow, he will have the opportunity to buy a “light” for 9,950 rubles. But this “light” will be heavier than the baggage fare, costing 9,500. Such miracles.

The baggage-free version has small miles in the Wings program - only 5% of the mileage instead of 10%, like most luggage-free ones.

Those flying on a business class baggage-free fare cannot access the airport business lounge. The fine for exchanging a business light is 5,000 rubles. They also have fewer miles than business luggage and the baggage allowance is reduced - 25 instead of 30 kilograms.

Ural "Wings"

The loyalty program, called "Wings", is created for its loyal and frequent flying passengers.

For each flight on a regular flight of the company, bonus rubles are credited to a special card, which can be obtained by becoming a member of the Wings club.

Holders of these cards have privileges, including luggage.

Thus, silver “wings” receive double the carry-on baggage allowance as a bonus for loyalty to the company, i.e. 20 kilograms.

Golden wings have 35 kilograms of carry-on luggage.

Silver and gold levels have:

  • free transportation of sports equipment per piece up to 23 kg;
  • free weight of items up to 32 kg;
  • 50% discount on overweight from 33 to 50 kg or oversize (above 203 cm in three-dimensional dimensions);
  • 50% discount for extra baggage. Gold card holders flying economy receive 1 piece of baggage weighing 23 kg free of charge, and the next one at half price.

Thus, in this tariff there is a discount for the excess cost of things; “UralAirlines,” as they say, take care of their regular customers.

Excessive

How much does it cost to transport things on a Ural Airlines plane if there is more of it than required?

Exceeding the norm in the number of places.

Since the “Promo” class does not have free baggage at all, starting with one piece weighing up to 23 kilograms, you will have to pay an additional 2,000 rubles. If a Promo passenger has two suitcases weighing up to 23 kilograms, then the additional payment for things on UralAirlines will be 4,000 rubles, and so on. This is the price at Ural Airlines for domestic flights. International fees are paid in euros.

Routes in the CIS and Georgia – 25 euros for each suitcase. With other international flights, for example, to Europe, it is more expensive - 50 euros for the first suitcase, and 150 euros for the second and subsequent ones. It turns out that it is very unprofitable to fly to distant foreign countries in the Promo class, carrying a suitcase with you.

The prices are similar for those flying Economy and Premium Economy classes, but they only pay for the second and subsequent suitcases weighing up to 23 kg. They have a free baggage allowance for the first (one) suitcase. Flights within Russia – 2000 rubles each. for the second and subsequent suitcases. CIS and Georgia - 25 euros each, non-CIS countries - 50 euros each.

Those flying in Business class carry two suitcases weighing up to 32 kg each free of charge and only pay for the third and subsequent ones - 2,000 rubles (50 and 150 euros) depending on the route.

“Business Light” and “Comfort Light” have the right to carry only one suitcase weighing up to 32 kg free of charge. And, starting from the second, the rates for excess baggage in the “Business” class come into effect for them.

Oversized

Exceeding the norm in size. Anything over 203 cm in three-dimensional dimensions is considered oversized. This rule applies to all classes of service.

Heavy

Exceeding the norm for weight.

For the “Promo”, “Economy” and “Premium Economy” classes, the excess weight fee starts from 23 kg. And for superior comfort classes - “Business”, “Business Light” and “Comfort Light” - from 32 kg.

If “Promo” and “economy” travelers have a suitcase weighing from 23 to 32 kg, then on domestic Russian flights they will have to pay an additional 2,000 rubles, within the CIS and to Georgia - 25 euros, and on non-CIS flights - 100 euros.

When the suitcase is even heavier - 32-50 kg - the payment for items on UralAirlines increases: 10,000 rubles, 100 and 150 euros, depending on the direction of the flight. This rule applies to all classes of service.

The airline should be notified in advance about oversized and overweight items, or about excess weight, when booking a ticket.

If the transportation of such special cargo has not been agreed upon with the company in advance, the carrier reserves the right to refuse to transport it due to “technical impossibility.” And you will find out this “good news” at the last moment, for example, when checking in for a flight.

Special

The airline allows free transportation:

  • golf equipment, if the baggage allowance is not exceeded;
  • a bicycle, if its dimensions when folded and packed are no more than 203 cm;
  • surfboards if it weighs less than 32 kg;
  • skis, hockey kit, if the weight of this equipment together with other things does not exceed 40 kg. If this condition is not met, you will need to pay extra at excess baggage rates;
  • guide dogs;
  • wheelchair, baby stroller.

So, as we see, Ural Airlines has a fairly flexible system for baggage and fares. Having studied it and taken into account some of its subtleties, you can fearlessly hit the road with your belongings. Well, now you know what their cost is on a Ural Airlines plane.

Each passenger has the right to take luggage on the plane free of charge weighing: 20 kg if he is flying in economy class, 30 kg when flying in business class and 40 kg in first class.

This standard usually includes the total weight of hand luggage and baggage. However, some airlines do not include carry-on baggage within these limits. Therefore, after purchasing a ticket, be sure to check the baggage allowance of a particular airline. The size of your luggage also matters - the total sum of the three dimensions should not exceed 203 cm for business class and 158 cm for economy class.

If we translate the language of numbers into ordinary words, then this is one large bag or suitcase, one small suitcase that can be taken on a plane and one small bag or backpack.

What is allowed to take into the salon?

Free cargo up to 10 kg with overall dimensions of no more than 115 cm is allowed in the aircraft cabin.

The baggage limit system is used mainly on transatlantic flights. A passenger of any class has the right to carry no more than 2 free pieces of baggage, each weighing up to 32 kg. The total weight of the seats is not cumulative. If the weight of a piece of luggage exceeds 32 kg, then an excess weight fee will be charged, even if the second piece of luggage weighs less than 32 kg.

In the cabin of the plane, in excess of the weight limit, you can take: a handbag, a plastic bag, a bouquet of flowers, an umbrella or cane, a scarf or blanket, a coat, a photo or video camera, a laptop, binoculars, a baby stroller, and some groceries.

A few practical tricks.

  • Let's say you have one large suitcase, one small suitcase, one bag and one backpack. It would be most convenient to check in an additional small suitcase (in addition to a large suitcase). To do this: before check-in, we hide the bag (we give it to a friend, ask our fellow travelers to keep an eye on it, put it in a storage room, leave it at the beginning of the line at the counters); check in a large suitcase; show a small suitcase and say that we can check it in too, if it’s free or we'll take it as hand luggage and get in the way of everyone on the plane. In most cases, it will be registered for free.
  • In addition to your baggage allowance, you can check in 2 more pieces of baggage free of charge. Both items must be carry-on size. Let's say you have: one large suitcase, one small suitcase, one bag, one backpack and one guitar in a case. To do this: before check-in, hide your bag and a small suitcase; check in a large suitcase and a guitar in a case (in the manner described above); go to the boarding gate with all the other things (the security service doesn’t care how many pieces of hand luggage you have); then you can go to the counter at the exit and ask if you can rent out one more seat, which will interfere with everyone on the plane. In most cases, it will be registered for free.

What will you still have to pay for?

There are items that are not subject to free carriage. These are musical instruments that must be transported in the cabin with the obligatory purchase of a separate ticket, and animals. This baggage is transported separately, regardless of the volume of other items and hand luggage. Payment for its transportation is carried out in accordance with the tariffs in force at the time of payment for this transportation service.

If the size and weight of luggage exceeds the permissible limits, you will have to pay extra in accordance with the airline's tariffs.

Typically, excess baggage is paid at the rate of 1-2% of the cost of economy class one way for each kg. It is better to solve all problems related to excess baggage in advance. The fee charged for its transportation is established in accordance with the applicable baggage tariffs, which are in effect on the day of payment for this service. Payment in excess of standard baggage is recorded in the receipt issued upon payment.

Crediting of payment for carriage of excess baggage is not provided. You can register this baggage as unaccompanied. It must be registered in advance using a separate air waybill.

Charter and low cost carriers

Standards and regulations for baggage transportation on charter and low-cost airlines.

On charter flights, these rules and regulations are determined by the tour operators chartering the flight. You need to get acquainted with them when purchasing an air ticket or tour.

Some low-cost carriers do not provide free baggage transportation at all. At the same time, it is usually cheaper to pay baggage fees at the same time as purchasing a ticket online than at the airport.

Typically, when you book a ticket, you pay a flat baggage fee, which includes 2 pieces of baggage with a total weight of up to 15 or 20 kg. Anything above this norm is paid additionally, depending on weight.

Low cost airlines do not allow luggage to be combined. For example, a couple is traveling and they have one suitcase weighing 30 kg between them. Therefore, they must pay for an excess of 10 kg.

The cost of baggage transportation will depend on the route and departure time. If the flight is scheduled during the so-called rush hour, the cost increases.

Airplane baggage rules

All people who are planning to travel by plane have questions related to baggage rules. What is allowed and what is prohibited to carry in a suitcase and hand luggage? What is the maximum allowed baggage weight? What to do if your luggage is lost? Even if you are an experienced traveler and have flown on an airplane not so long ago, it is still worth reviewing the information about baggage rules. It is possible that some changes have been made to the regulations during this time.

If we talk about the rules for transporting baggage, they establish that each passenger has the right to carry his own baggage within the established norm. These regulations may vary depending on the carrier's regulations and the type of aircraft.

Baggage is checked individually for each passenger. So, how much does it weigh in grams?

Baggage system

There are 2 baggage systems in the world: the weight system and the number of pieces system. Let's look at each one separately.

Baggage weight system– this system is used on most flights of CIS countries, Asia and European airlines.

Free baggage allowance on the plane according to the weight system:

  • 20 kg per passenger in economy class;
  • 30 kg per passenger in business class;
  • 10 kg per child under 2 years old.

Baggage weight may be increased by 10-20 kg if you are a member of the airline's bonus program.

The weight system does not limit the number of places, so you can take 2 bags of 10 kg each.

Some destinations have higher baggage weight limits, so when purchasing an air ticket, be sure to check which limits apply for your specific route. As a rule, this information is indicated on your itinerary receipt.

Number of seats system– this is the standard free baggage allowance on an airplane based on the number of seats, applicable on all flights to and from North and South America, determined based on the dimensions of the baggage piece. The sum of three dimensions (length + width + height). The size of 1 piece of baggage and business class must not exceed 158 cm and must not exceed 32 kg. When Economy Class passengers carry two pieces of baggage, the total sum of the measurements of these two items must not exceed 273 cm and not more than 23 kilograms.

Not only European carriers, but also Aeroflot have switched to this system.

It is worth considering that the weight of luggage is not cumulative. If there is an excess in one suitcase, you will need to pay for it, even if the number of kilograms in the other suitcase is less than the maximum allowed.

Free baggage allowance on the plane according to the number of seats:

  • In business class– 2 pieces of luggage, weight no more than 32 kg
  • In economy class– 1 piece of luggage, weight no more than 23 kg
  • Baggage allowance for children from 0 to 2 years old(without providing a separate seat) the free checked baggage allowance is 1 piece weighing no more than 10 kilograms (the sum of 3 dimensions is no more than 115 cm), regardless of what class you are flying.
  • For children from 2 to 12 years old– the free baggage allowance is the same as for an adult passenger.
  • Hand luggage– these are things whose weight and dimensions do not exceed established standards and can be placed in the aircraft cabin without posing a threat to passengers.

The carry-on baggage allowance depends on the class:

1st place (up to 15 kg, sum of three dimensions – 115 cm) – business class, “President”, “Premier”;

1st place (up to 10 kg, sum of three dimensions – 115 cm) – economy class.

Those things that are provided for in the list in the Baggage Carriage Rules, the passenger has the right to take them with him into the aircraft cabin - free of charge: an umbrella, outerwear, a handbag, a baby stroller, a book for reading on the plane, baby food for feeding a child on the plane , camera, phone, video camera, laptop, carrycot and some other items.

These items are not weighed, processed or tagged.

Attention! Pay attention to the discounts and “bonuses” offered when purchasing air tickets. Each airline periodically conducts this type of advertising campaign. Before your trip, be sure to inquire about the availability of this information, in addition to the obligatory clarification of the specific standards for free baggage for your chosen airline.

Allowed baggage weight on a Ural Airlines plane

Current information for passengers can be found in the "Frequently Asked Questions" section.

Budget airlines are known for having slightly more restrictions on the weight of luggage, unlike large airlines that are not in any way related to the low-cost segment of airlines. While restrictions on baggage dimensions are similar for different airlines. This is explained by the fact that restrictions on baggage dimensions are set based on the capabilities of airport equipment.

Sometimes restrictions on baggage dimensions may be based on the capabilities of aircraft equipment. Some low-cost airlines may use small turboprop aircraft, which have very small luggage compartments. However, this is rather an exception to the rule. Most popular low-cost airlines use wide-body jets that have standardized loading capabilities.

Baggage weight is critical for low cost airlines. Two factors that are taken into account when determining baggage limits are:

  1. Permitted take-off weight of the aircraft. It’s no wonder that budget airlines for the most part do not use business lounges, preferring to install the maximum possible number of passenger seats on the plane with the minimum allowable gaps between them. This allows you to increase the number of passengers that the aircraft can carry on board.
Additional passengers always mean additional weight. To meet the aircraft manufacturer's takeoff weight limit, an airline's aircraft must carry less heavy baggage.
  1. Optimal fuel consumption. Aviation fuel is a major cost line for airlines. Every airline tries to use expensive fuel as little as possible. To achieve this, airlines are purchasing the latest and most fuel-efficient types of aircraft, equipped with modern engines and winglets (vertical tail of the wings), and also deliberately reducing the take-off weight of aircraft and setting limits on the weight of passenger luggage. These measures can save millions of euros even for one airline.
  1. Technical capabilities of automatic baggage handling at the airport. Airlines have to take this factor into account, since the equipment (transporters) can only handle items of a certain size and weight.

The standard limit on the dimensions of checked baggage is 80 (height) x 120 (width) x 120 (length) cm. Certain types of baggage may exceed the established limits. For example, skis and musical instruments. They can also be accepted for transportation by airlines, but the conditions regarding them are specified in a special way in the airline’s rules.

The standard size limit for hand luggage is 60 (height) x 20 (width) x 40 (length) cm. However, in this case the restrictions are not strict. The dimensions of hand luggage are assessed by airline employees by eye. Minor deviations are acceptable.

The same applies to the weight of hand luggage. Here, weight restrictions vary depending on the airline and can range from 5 to 10 kg. However, in any case, small deviations are also allowed.

Quite often, some stages of loading/unloading luggage are performed with human participation. This is what determines the restrictions on the maximum weight of one piece of luggage.

The weight of checked baggage must be determined on scales during check-in. The standard weight limit for checked baggage is 20 kg per passenger (varies by no more than 5 kg depending on the airline).

It should be noted that this is the so-called baggage allowance included in the price, which may not be available on low-cost airlines. If baggage exceeds this limit, it can also be accepted for transportation, but the passenger will have to pay extra for each kilogram above the limit at the airline price. This can be quite expensive (from 15 to 50 euros per kg), so you should not carry very heavy luggage unless absolutely necessary.

But there are limitations here too. Even if you are willing to pay for excess baggage, it will still not be loaded onto the plane if the weight of the item exceeds 30 (sometimes referred to up to 35) kg. This is due to the capabilities of airport equipment and forklifts.

If one bag weighs more than allowed, it is recommended to divide the items into two or more bags.

It must be remembered that the approach to determining baggage allowances differs between European and American budget airlines. While European (as well as Asian) airlines calculate limits based on weight, American airlines rely on the number of items checked in luggage. For example, most American carriers allow you to take one bag checked in for free, but for the second bag you will have to pay a fixed amount of money, regardless of its weight.

Although there is a weight limit here, also related to the capabilities of airport equipment and loaders.

By charging for over-the-limit baggage, airlines recoup their costs for the fuel that must be burned to carry the baggage.
