The baggage limit system is used mainly on transatlantic flights. A passenger of any class has the right to carry no more than 2 free pieces of baggage, each weighing up to 32 kg. The total weight of the seats is not cumulative. If the weight of a piece of luggage exceeds 32 kg, then an excess weight fee will be charged, even if the second piece of luggage weighs less than 32 kg.
In the cabin of the plane, in excess of the weight limit, you can take: a handbag, a plastic bag, a bouquet of flowers, an umbrella or cane, a scarf or blanket, a coat, a photo or video camera, a laptop, binoculars, a baby stroller, and some groceries.
A few practical tricks.
- Let's say you have one large suitcase, one small suitcase, one bag and one backpack. It would be most convenient to check in an additional small suitcase (in addition to a large suitcase). To do this: before check-in, we hide the bag (we give it to a friend, ask our fellow travelers to keep an eye on it, put it in a storage room, leave it at the beginning of the line at the counters); check in a large suitcase; show a small suitcase and say that we can check it in too, if it’s free or we'll take it as hand luggage and get in the way of everyone on the plane. In most cases, it will be registered for free.
- In addition to your baggage allowance, you can check in 2 more pieces of baggage free of charge. Both items must be carry-on size. Let's say you have: one large suitcase, one small suitcase, one bag, one backpack and one guitar in a case. To do this: before check-in, hide your bag and a small suitcase; check in a large suitcase and a guitar in a case (in the manner described above); go to the boarding gate with all the other things (the security service doesn’t care how many pieces of hand luggage you have); then you can go to the counter at the exit and ask if you can rent out one more seat, which will interfere with everyone on the plane. In most cases, it will be registered for free.
What will you still have to pay for?
There are items that are not subject to free carriage. These are musical instruments that must be transported in the cabin with the obligatory purchase of a separate ticket, and animals. This baggage is transported separately, regardless of the volume of other items and hand luggage. Payment for its transportation is carried out in accordance with the tariffs in force at the time of payment for this transportation service.
If the size and weight of luggage exceeds the permissible limits, you will have to pay extra in accordance with the airline's tariffs.
Typically, excess baggage is paid at the rate of 1-2% of the cost of economy class one way for each kg. It is better to solve all problems related to excess baggage in advance. The fee charged for its transportation is established in accordance with the applicable baggage tariffs, which are in effect on the day of payment for this service. 
Payment in excess of standard baggage is recorded in the receipt issued upon payment.
Crediting of payment for carriage of excess baggage is not provided. You can register this baggage as unaccompanied. It must be registered in advance using a separate air waybill.
Charter and low cost carriers

On charter flights, these rules and regulations are determined by the tour operators chartering the flight. You need to get acquainted with them when purchasing an air ticket or tour.
Some low-cost carriers do not provide free baggage transportation at all. At the same time, it is usually cheaper to pay baggage fees at the same time as purchasing a ticket online than at the airport.
Typically, when you book a ticket, you pay a flat baggage fee, which includes 2 pieces of baggage with a total weight of up to 15 or 20 kg. Anything above this norm is paid additionally, depending on weight.
Low cost airlines do not allow luggage to be combined. For example, a couple is traveling and they have one suitcase weighing 30 kg between them. Therefore, they must pay for an excess of 10 kg.
The cost of baggage transportation will depend on the route and departure time. If the flight is scheduled during the so-called rush hour, the cost increases.

Free baggage allowance on the plane according to the weight system:
- 20 kg per passenger in economy class;
- 30 kg per passenger in business class;
- 10 kg per child under 2 years old.
Baggage weight may be increased by 10-20 kg if you are a member of the airline's bonus program.
The weight system does not limit the number of places, so you can take 2 bags of 10 kg each.
Some destinations have higher baggage weight limits, so when purchasing an air ticket, be sure to check which limits apply for your specific route. As a rule, this information is indicated on your itinerary receipt.
Number of seats system– this is the standard free baggage allowance on an airplane based on the number of seats, applicable on all flights to and from North and South America, determined based on the dimensions of the baggage piece. The sum of three dimensions (length + width + height). The size of 1 piece of baggage and business class must not exceed 158 cm and must not exceed 32 kg. When Economy Class passengers carry two pieces of baggage, the total sum of the measurements of these two items must not exceed 273 cm and not more than 23 kilograms.
Not only European carriers, but also Aeroflot have switched to this system.
It is worth considering that the weight of luggage is not cumulative. If there is an excess in one suitcase, you will need to pay for it, even if the number of kilograms in the other suitcase is less than the maximum allowed.
Free baggage allowance on the plane according to the number of seats:
- In business class– 2 pieces of luggage, weight no more than 32 kg
- In economy class– 1 piece of luggage, weight no more than 23 kg

1st place (up to 15 kg, sum of three dimensions – 115 cm) – business class, “President”, “Premier”;
1st place (up to 10 kg, sum of three dimensions – 115 cm) – economy class.

Budget airlines are known for having slightly more restrictions on the weight of luggage, unlike large airlines that are not in any way related to the low-cost segment of airlines. While restrictions on baggage dimensions are similar for different airlines. This is explained by the fact that restrictions on baggage dimensions are set based on the capabilities of airport equipment.
Sometimes restrictions on baggage dimensions may be based on the capabilities of aircraft equipment. This allows you to increase the number of passengers that the aircraft can carry on board.
- Optimal fuel consumption. Aviation fuel is a major cost line for airlines. Every airline tries to use expensive fuel as little as possible. To achieve this, airlines are purchasing the latest and most fuel-efficient types of aircraft, equipped with modern engines and winglets (vertical tail of the wings), and also deliberately reducing the take-off weight of aircraft and setting limits on the weight of passenger luggage. These measures can save millions of euros even for one airline.
- Technical capabilities of automatic baggage handling at the airport. Airlines have to take this factor into account, since the equipment (transporters) can only handle items of a certain size and weight.
The standard limit on the dimensions of checked baggage is 80 (height) x 120 (width) x 120 (length) cm. Certain types of baggage may exceed the established limits. For example, skis and musical instruments. They can also be accepted for transportation by airlines, but the conditions regarding them are specified in a special way in the airline’s rules.
The standard size limit for hand luggage is 60 (height) x 20 (width) x 40 (length) cm. However, in this case the restrictions are not strict. The dimensions of hand luggage are assessed by airline employees by eye. Minor deviations are acceptable.
The same applies to the weight of hand luggage. Here, weight restrictions vary depending on the airline and can range from 5 to 10 kg. However, in any case, small deviations are also allowed.
Quite often, some stages of loading/unloading luggage are performed with human participation. This is what determines the restrictions on the maximum weight of one piece of luggage.
The weight of checked baggage must be determined on scales during check-in. The standard weight limit for checked baggage is 20 kg per passenger (varies by no more than 5 kg depending on the airline).
It should be noted that this is the so-called baggage allowance included in the price, which may not be available on low-cost airlines. If baggage exceeds this limit, it can also be accepted for transportation, but the passenger will have to pay extra for each kilogram above the limit at the airline price. This can be quite expensive (from 15 to 50 euros per kg), so you should not carry very heavy luggage unless absolutely necessary.
But there are limitations here too. Even if you are willing to pay for excess baggage, it will still not be loaded onto the plane if the weight of the item exceeds 30 (sometimes referred to up to 35) kg. This is due to the capabilities of airport equipment and forklifts.
If one bag weighs more than allowed, it is recommended to divide the items into two or more bags.
It must be remembered that the approach to determining baggage allowances differs between European and American budget airlines. While European (as well as Asian) airlines calculate limits based on weight, American airlines rely on the number of items checked in luggage. For example, most American carriers allow you to take one bag checked in for free, but for the second bag you will have to pay a fixed amount of money, regardless of its weight.

By charging for over-the-limit baggage, airlines recoup their costs for the fuel that must be burned to carry the baggage.

Rules for the carriage of baggage and hand luggage on an airplane

Maximum weight and dimensions of baggage checked on board
For a tourist traveling in economy class, the weight of luggage should not exceed 23 kilograms, and the sum of three dimensions (height + width + length) should be 158 cm. The handle, pockets and wheels are included in the dimensions. Overweight is allowed from 23 kg to 32 kg, in which case the passenger is charged an additional fee at the carrier's rate.
In business class, baggage weighing no more than 32 kilograms is carried free of charge; the size of baggage in the sum of three dimensions must also not exceed 158 cm.

For children under 2 years of age (without being provided with a separate seat on the plane), regardless of what class you are flying, the free checked baggage allowance is: weight no more than 10 kilograms, the sum of length + width + height - no more than 115 cm.
For children from 2 to 12 years old, the free baggage allowance is the same as for an adult passenger.

Rules for carrying hand luggage on an airplane
Hand luggage is items that can be placed in the aircraft cabin if they do not exceed the established standards and do not pose a threat to passengers.
Carry-on baggage allowance depends on the class:
in economy class - weight up to 10 kg, length + width + height - no more than 115 cm;
in business class - weight up to 15 kg, length + width + height - no more than 115 cm.

Allowances for carrying liquids in hand luggage
From January 6, 2014 to April 1, 2014, to ensure safety during the Olympic Games in Sochi, a complete ban on the carriage of any liquids in hand luggage was temporarily introduced at all Russian airports. Since April 2, 2014, the complete ban has been lifted, and the previous transportation rules apply.
How much liquid can you take on board an airplane?

All liquids in packaging larger than 100 ml must be checked in as checked baggage.
Liquids in containers with a capacity of more than 100 ml are not accepted for transportation, even if the container is only partially filled.
Exceptions to transportation include medications, baby food, and special dietary needs.
In exceptional cases, they may be allowed to carry liquids in quantities greater than those provided for in the Rules, but they must be opened and checked at the checkpoint.
Each passenger is required to present a plastic bag with liquids, portable equipment, and outerwear for inspection through a scanner.

Subject to the required conditions allowed transport the following items and substances on the plane:
In checked baggage in cargo and luggage compartments of an aircraft with isolated passenger access to luggage during the flight:
Crossbows, spearguns, checkers, sabers, cutlasses, scimitars, broadswords, swords, rapiers, bayonets, daggers, knives: hunting knives, knives with ejectable blades, with locking locks, simulators of any type of weapon;
Household knives (scissors) with a blade length over 60 mm;

Medical thermometer - one per passenger;

A mercury barometer or manometer, packed in an airtight container and sealed with a seal;
Disposable lighters - one per passenger;
Dry ice for cooling perishable foods - no more than 2 kg per passenger;
3% hydrogen peroxide - no more than 100 ml per passenger;
Liquids, gels and aerosols classified as non-hazardous: a total volume of no more than 1 liter. Each liquid must be in a container with a capacity of no more than 100 ml. All containers must be packed in a securely sealed transparent plastic bag. One package per passenger.
Carriage of electronic devices on board an aircraft
Electronic devices used by passengers on board an aircraft can affect the operation of aircraft navigation systems and radio communications.
To ensure flight safety, it is prohibited to use:
during the entire flight- radiotelephones, radio receivers, radio transmitters, televisions, wireless network devices, remote-controlled toys;
during takeoff, taxiing, climb, descent and landing of the aircraft- laptop computers, portable printers, video/photo/film cameras, cameras, tape recorders, players and other laser devices, electronic toys, electrical appliances, devices with LEDs in their design.
Can be used without restrictions: electronic wristwatches, pacemakers, hearing aids.
Cordless phones must be turned off, regardless of where they are - in checked luggage or hand luggage!
If there are suspicions about the influence of devices on the normal operation of the aircraft's navigation and radio communication systems, the captain of the aircraft has the right to demand that passengers stop using all electronic devices on board the aircraft.
Lost luggage
Upon arrival at the destination, the passenger can receive his luggage based on the baggage receipt or tag previously issued to him.
If your baggage is missing, upon your written request, the carrier is obliged to take all necessary measures to search for the baggage.
If luggage is found, the carrier is obliged to deliver it free of charge to the address specified by the passenger.
What to do if your luggage is lost?
If your luggage is not found within 21 days or is returned damaged, file a complaint with the airline.
You are required to compensate for damage caused in connection with the loss of luggage or part thereof. If you are denied compensation, contact the court at your place of residence to demand compensation for moral and material damage.
