The Chinese city of Hunchun (translated as “gate of spring”) is known not only to residents of the Far East, especially Primorsky Krai or Khabarovsk, but also to Russians from other regions of the country, as one of the many cities in China where a Russian tourist-traveler can feel almost like Houses. This tourist city with its own specifics and characteristics, which actually received its development precisely thanks to cross-border tourism, the boom of which occurred at the beginning of 1990-2000.

The history of Hunchun is rather modest, except that in the 19th century it was in this city that an agreement was concluded between the Russian Empire and Imperial China on the state border.

Now it is a completely modern city with a population of about 300 thousand people, which has modern infrastructure, a network of very good roads, and tourist services.

The mainstay of Hunchun's economy, other than tourism, until recently was mainly agriculture and food processing, as well as coal mining at several local mines. Now the basis of the economy of this wonderful city is cross-border trade and economic cooperation with both Russia and North Korea, the borders with which are literally 14 and 10 kilometers away, respectively.

Actually, thanks to this unique location at the junction of the borders of three states, Hunchun has become attractive not only for tourists, but also for businessmen.

Another feature of this city is that it has a multinational population, where approximately half of its population are ethnic Koreans (Hunchun is part of the administrative structure of the Korean Yanbian Autonomous Region, centered in Jilin or Jilin), and the other half are Chinese ( predominantly Han Chinese). There are also Manchus, Mongols, Udege, Tibetans and even a small diaspora of Uyghurs (Muslim population from the western part of China).

It is also especially worth noting that about 200 Russian families permanently live in Hunchun, having bought apartments there as their own, either doing business or simply living on their modest pensions. This is the third border city after Heihe (Blagoveshchensk) and Suifenhe (Pogranichny village, Primorsky Krai), where numerous Russian diasporas live.

The main advantages of the city of Hunchun and its calling card are that:

  1. Due to its location, Hunchun is often used by tourists and businessmen as a convenient transit point for trips to the rest of China. Thanks to the high-speed railway (CRM, train speed up to 350 km/h), you can reach major cities in the northern provinces of China such as Harbin, Mudanjiang, Changchun, Shenyang and others in a few hours. The nearest international airport is in Yangtze City, which can be reached in just 40 minutes by high-speed train. In addition, Hunchun is connected to Vladivostok by a recently renovated good highway, which allows tourists to travel from the capital of the Primorsky Territory to the border in 3.5 hours.

  1. Another specific feature of Hunchun is that it is the only city in border China where Russian tourists go specifically for treatment. Medical tourism is mainly associated with prosthetics and dental implants, massages and traditional Chinese medicine. There are more than 100 dental clinics in the city, one way or another focused on the Russian contingent. Moreover, all doctors either speak Russian, or the patient is always accompanied by an interpreter.
  1. The third feature of the city is that it is a city with a very calm atmosphere, since it does not belong to the number of trading cities like, for example, the well-known Suifenhe with eternal crowds of shuttles, “helpers” and hours-long queues of buses going across the border.

Sights of Hunchun City

Geographical position

The main feature or attraction of the city of Hunchun is, of course, its geographical location. There are few places where you can see the junction of three state borders. In this case, Russia, China and North Korea (DPRK). Moreover, this is not difficult to do, since there is an opportunity to visit a special tourist center on the Tri-Border Region, located in the town of Fanchuan. The journey there by taxi will take only 30-40 minutes (taxi cost from 50 yuan). Also, visits to the Tri-Border region are organized with the help of tourist groups. From the observation tower, in good weather, you can see not only the junction of three borders, the border river Tumangan or Tamanjian, Lake Khasan, but even the Sea of Japan. It should be noted that this tourist route is popular not only among Russians, but also among the Chinese themselves, who come here from Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong (Hong Kong), and there are also many European tourists.

Ling Bao Si Temple

The next attraction of the city, which has a historical and cultural national connotation, is the active Buddhist temple of Ling Bao Si, located on the small mountain Bai Shan, which offers a bewitching panoramic view of the city. The temple is open to the public after a recent major renovation. The entrance ticket costs only 30 yuan. The temple is located very close to the city bus station - literally a 20-minute walk up from the bus station. You can get there either by taxi (10 yuan from the city center) or by city bus number 3 for just 1 yuan.

Kon Yua Park

Naturally, one of the main attractions of the city of Hunchun, for all ages and generations of tourists, is the Kong Yua City Park.

It is interesting not only because it is located on the banks of the picturesque small river Hong Hae (red river) with lakes, but also because there you can always see either dancing, singing Chinese and Koreans playing various national musical instruments. There you can relax in numerous gazebos on the banks of the river and lake, admire lotuses, families of ducks, ride on boats with awnings (there are rowing boats, and some with electric motors). In addition, the park has many attractions on which people can ride, jump and Not only children, but also adults enjoy flying. In the evening, the park is illuminated with amazingly colorful lighting, which in combination with trees, the water surface of the lake and park figures (illuminated seahorses and a shell) create a unique ambiance of some fabulous and romantic place.

Eastern Square

Another similar attraction of Hunchun is its famous East Square. It gained this fame because it constantly hosts collective dances to the music of local residents, sometimes in colorful costumes. Everyone can dance, and many Russian tourists (mostly female tourists) go to Hunchun specifically for this.

Also, the peculiarities of the Eastern Square include the fact that there you can enjoy traditional Chinese and Korean dishes in any form and for every taste until late in the evening.

Eight Horses Square

Eight Horse Square (Ba Ji Jiao) – this square is located near the Hunchun or Electricity Hotel and 10 minutes from the main hotel of the city - Tumangan. In fact, these eight horses are the symbol of the city. The number eight is almost beyond doubt, since according to Chinese numerology it is the number of wealth. Well, the rapidly rushing horses symbolize the rapid development of the city, which must be said to be true.

European street

Anyone who comes to the city of Hunchun for the first time does not expect that in the most provincial city in China one can find a street with purely European architecture, bas-reliefs and sculptures in the art deco style.

In fact, this street got its name because of this. On this street there are iconic restaurants such as, for example, “St. Petersburg”, where you can not only dine on authentic Chinese or Korean cuisine, but also listen to live music and singing, and all the artists are our compatriots - Russians.

In addition to these main attractions, you can add such places that are worth visiting - this is the famous Torgovaya Street, with its no less famous “subway”, where you can buy almost everything.

Shopping street - from the side of the Main Post Office or the More Hotel in Hunchun. This is its beginning.

Also, it is on this street that the largest shopping center in the city, Hyundai (formerly called Go Mai), is located. Also, not only tourists, but local residents love to visit the forest park on Mount Bai Shan (located behind the Ling Bao Si Temple), the river embankment in the city center, the Fu Li Lai bakery and the cafe-bar "Crossroads", "Guan - Yuan" etc.

Where to stay - hotels

Hunchun City is a tourist city that is unthinkable without good hotels. At the beginning of its tourist career, there was only one hotel for tourists in the city - the Torgovlya Hotel (it still exists on Torgovlya Street). Nowadays there are more than 30 modern hotels of three star class and above in Hunchun.

The most famous and most in demand by tourists are Tumangan, Shenbo, Wu Di, Hunchun, Electricity (“electric train”). There is also the classic Hilton, Forest Hill and Marco Polo. But they are rarely populated by “package travelers” (that is, tourist groups) and are intended more for business tourists and other traveling public.

The average cost of rooms in hotels in the city ranges from 90 to 180 yuan per day. But a lot depends on the tourist season, the peak of which is in the summer and during the New Year and winter school holidays.

You can also rent an apartment in any part of the city for a longer stay in the city (if, for example, long-term treatment in local clinics is required). This can be done through a translator for the tourist group. The average price of a rented one-room apartment is from 500 yuan and above.

Transport

Like any modern city in China, Hunchun provides the opportunity to develop and operate all types of transport services.

  • bus service. There are 8 city routes. All routes must pass through the central areas of the city. The most useful for tourists is route number 3, as it connects Trade Street, where the main flow of tourists and hotels, Eastern Square and the Bus Station (Ke Win Ja). The fare is 1 yuan. If the bus goes to suburban villages (routes such as 4, 6 and 8), then you should keep in mind that the cost increases to 2.5 yuan one way.
  • taxi - the city's taxi fleet has recently been completely renovated. The average price of a taxi in the city center is 5 yuan, for longer distances - 10. To the train station - 25 yuan, since it is located in the extreme northern eastern part of the city.
  • bicycles and auto-rickshaws for every taste and price. The minimum price for a pedicab is 2 yuan; auto-rickshaws charge 3-4 yuan for their services, depending on the distance.

There is also a taxi service in Hunchun, especially for Russian tourists. The dispatcher speaks Russian and you can call or order a taxi by phone yourself, without the help of an interpreter.

And in conclusion, a few words about how you can get to the city from our territory. Several regular buses run to the city of Hunchun from Vladivostok, mainly from the Primoravtotrans company. On the website of this company you can not only find out the schedule, but also make electronic booking and print an electronic ticket. There are also three regular buses going to Hunchun from the village of Slavyanka (the regional center of the Khasansky district).

As for regular buses from Hunchun to Vladivostok, there are 3 flights daily and three flights to Slavyanka. The first bus leaves, according to the schedule, from Hunchun at 7.30 local time (the time difference with Vladivostok is 2 hours).

You can also get to Hunchun by your own car. True, only to the border. In the village of Kraskino (border crossing) there is a parking lot (150 rubles per day), where you can leave your car and network for the nearest regular bus by purchasing a ticket directly from the driver. For such travel options, of course, you need a visa. A single-entry visa, in principle, can be issued at Chinese customs for 4,500 rubles.

In the city of Hunchun it is quite easy to find accommodation options to suit any budget. There are both cheap hotels starting from 80 yuan per night for a double room, as well as four-star hotels with more comfortable living conditions.
